which newspapers to advertise in

edited November -1 in Site Issues
Does anyone have thoughts on which paper(s) I should advertise in to put the word out about my business. In particular, I'd like to advertise to people in the Bococa, Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo, Park Slope areas.
Thanks for any ideas!

  • What type of business?
  • computer support, networking, and other IT stuff. Any ideas?
  • For my consulting business I have found the most cost effective way to advertise is by setting up a Google Adwords account and bidding on key words. For example, I have some ads currently running that have been shown 50,000 times in the past week resulting in 52 click-thrus to my website. Total cost = $17.

The price of hard copy advertising is outrageous, and you don't target a wide enough audience for your message. Everyone uses the internet. I've been in business 12 years and have tried every kind of advertising available - and this is the best way to do it. Realize that someone normally must actually see your ad 9 times before they will contact you - valid statistics that have been well documented. That's a lot of money for hard copy advertising. Good Luck!
  • Thank you so much for this thoughtful response. The website is not yet up, so it may be premature for me to go through Adwords. But it also sounds like it may not be worth my time and money to go through hard copy. Maybe it's smarter just to wait until the website is up and running.
    Thanks again!
  • If you are looking for an easy way to develop your website - that provides you with statistics as to where people are coming from to get to your website - I very highly recommend you check out www.intuit.com

I looked at lots of options before creating my website, and this was the very best in my opinion. Very reasonably priced at ~ $19 per month for hosting and you can get a free website address from them to create your website from if you do not already have one.

I've developed 2 websites - one using Microsoft Front Page 12 years ago for my consulting business, and Intuit for the property I'm currently selling. Go with Intuit. If you want to see some of the picture and video options available that are easy to use - you can check out my website www.103grand.com and click on the Interiors Page, the Garden Page, and the Neighborhood Page.

Regarding Google Adwords, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about it. It basically works off of keywords or phrases you pick - and you can also specifically target where you want your ads to run and only run - e.g. Brooklyn, NYC, Jersey City, Hoboken, etc. I'm using it for selling my property as well.
  • Newspaper ads are ending up being a complete waste of money for me. People don't read them anymore, I have one ad that is ending in about 4 months and I have already paid for it. Online marketing has been my best tool and word of mouth in the online communities such as this. I get calls everyday from phonebooks/newspapers etc and I fell for one of them because i thought it was a good deal. I do a lot better with fliers and the web. I own a carpet and upholstery cleaning business so it is a little different than yours but still service. My website was built by a friend of mine for a fairly reasonable price check it out and if you like I can put you in touch with him. He is a graduate from F.I.T. for graphic design..its clean, neat and my customers love it.
