Are there dog friendly places to live in Brooklyn?

If you have the resources, a pet deposit works wonders. We've had our dog in two "absolutely no dogs" apartments and after meeting us and with the offering of a pet deposit along with security (rate has been around half a month's rent, I think) we have gotten what we wanted.
Also, if the dogs are quiet and you have neighbors or a previous LL who is willing to act as a reference about this, I think that would help.
I say that if a place sounds like one that might be right for you, go look at it even if it says no pets and then go from there.
And, there are so many dogs here that I find it hard to believe there is that little of dog-friendly housing.
Good luck! -
Four elderly dogs? You sound like my kind of people

Having even one dog, definitely does make it harder to find an apartment. Like OQ says, a pet deposit probably is effective, but I've never been able to pay one, or been asked to pay one. What I've always relied on is negotiation skills and flat-out talking to people to impress on the landlord and his or her representative that I am a responsible person. Leaning on my job helps: I work with animals and this makes landlords more comfortable. In your case, if you can't do that, lean on how long you've had the dogs and that you've managed them the whole time. And give references.
This is still a renters' market, so you should have some leverage. (And I've gotten supposedly no-pet apartments back when the situation was reversed)
If all else fails, look up the legal definition of "open and notorious". -
Thanks to both of you for the info. Makes me feel like it's not impossible. I have had them all since they were pups - they have been on many adventures with m and have always been the most well behaved. I am currently renting and will be able to get a good reference. I figured I would offer a big deposit too.
What kind of work do you do with animals?
Thanks again! TR
