An animal hospital is going in next door.

Isn't there a small organic market just a half-block, or so, north of there on the same side of the street? I wonder if the market is moving and expanding. -
a fish market would be so, so awesome.

Agreed, as long as there's no hidden passageway from the animal hospital! -

The one with the kale chips on Flatbush at 6th closed, didn't it? Or is this the same people?

Yea, it closed and they are not reopening. They are now making Kale chips!

Good idea. I would rather a butcher shop. Natural Land has pretty good fish, IMO. -

I didn't know they closed. A whole business based on kale chips? These must be some might fine chips. I can make them in my oven in 15 minutes (they're v. easy).

One of the guys working on the space estimated they would open the first or second week of April. I'm excited both to have nice produce and to see those fugly Ebay signs come down.

i would be very happy with a butcher, too. -
I looked into I Sold It a few months ago.
The commission is "typically 33% to 40%", so I said no way.
(Now, granted, I still haven't bothered to sell it myself....) -

Haha..I know what you mean. I did sell several things through them, but I would get a quote on what they thought they could get and try craigslist first. Some items were easy for me to get that price (and all to myself) so I just sold them myself, but others got no interest. And it was the small kind of stuff that it is easy to forget about in the back of a drawer until it has no value so I decided only getting 60% or whatever it was, was better than nothing to clean out some drawers.

Once I get over the inertia and get everything set up, I'll be mad selling stuff on ebay. You'll see

Oneoneone,
Would you post a recipe for those kale chips? Sounds tasty. -

Here's my recipe. Wash some kale & shake out as much water as you can. Chop the kale into chip-like strips (i.e. don't shred it, but don't leave the leaves whole.) Don't chop up the stem--discard it.

Spread the leaves single-layer onto a baking sheet. I sprinkle my chips w/salt, but you could use any spices or salts here (I picked up some "Bacon Salt" at Natural Land which I think would work great). You could also toss everything with some olive oil.
Then I pop the sheet into a reasonably hot oven, 350 to 400F and roast 'em till they're crispy. Depending on how much water was left on the leaves this will take anywhere from 5 to 10 mins.
Remove from oven & enjoy!
I have NO idea if this is at all similar to the recipe the store was using. It's just something I improvised after seeing the sign outside the store. -
they used dehydrators to make their kale chips. i have one and have tried to do the same. it takes a LONG time, but the results are delicious.
they were your standard small natural foods store with a juice bar for a while. then they started carrying kale chips sourced from the west coast and they really caught on. there was an issue with the west coast supplier, so they bought a bunch of dehydrators and started making their own. that became so successful that they replaced the juice bar with the dehydrators. raising rents and where the demand was led to them taking the step. seems smart to me, and absolutely best of luck to them. -
I guess I'm being overly squeamish, but having an Animal Hospital jammed between a grocery and a restaurant really bothers me. After all, an animal hospital is going to produce a lot of medical waste as well as feces that need to be disposed of and it appears they have very little space.
-
I drove by it today and saw a METRO PC sign right between the corner store and the animal hospital. It isn't clear though whether it is part of the whole corner space or not. If it's between the two, it might be really tiny.
