anyone running ad blockers on their browser? — Brooklynian

anyone running ad blockers on their browser?

I sometimes feel i'm the only one looking at the lousy ads. In the past i know tons of guys run ad blockers.

Comments

  • I do, but I usually leave them unblocked on brooklynian. I occasionally click through on semi-interesting ads - it sure can't hurt as far as generating revenue for site maintenance.
  • I had it, but when I updated Mozilla FireFox it disappear. Not sure if I have to download it again, or how to reactivate.. preferences shows it's there.. but it's not active...baahhh
  • I guess I'm biased, but I think it's unethical to block ads on independently-run websites like Brooklynian.

I put in very long hours to maintain/build this site, and while we used to get support in the form of member donations, that never happens anymore.

This is not a comment specifically on mamacita or armchair... don't mean to offend!
  • I agree with DH, I was just using it for sites that set off my Real Player downloader, it freaked me out and that's when I installed it.
  • That's funny- doesn't Carnivore use ad blocker? Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he at least used to for this site...
  • I don't. Usually advertisements of any kind annoy the sh-t out of me, but web ads don't bother me.

And yeah, most of the sites I visit are independently run, so if they need to count my page view, they should.
  • I have the Firefox adblock extension but I've taken to reading this site in my RSS reader, RSS Owl, which is Java-based and has its own browser which I haven't bothered to figure out how to integrate the available plugins into. So I'm seeing (and ignoring) the ads.

Perhaps .001% of web ads are for things I'm interested in, so I routinely totally ignore them. If I never click on them, I don't see the harm in blocking them. What, I have to give mindshare by seeing them? Doesn't work anyway, or works in reverse, as in "Those are the guys with the huge annoying banner ads, don't buy anything from them" [-X
  • >>What, I have to give mindshare by seeing them?

If everybody blocked ads, advertisers would say, wow, zero ad impressions! nobody reads Brooklynian! And there would be no more Brooklynian, since advertising is the only way the site is financed.

So if you're going to ignore ads anyway, it's a favor to us if you leave the ads unblocked.
  • I see. So they're paying per ad served rather than on clickthrough, and if someone runs an adblocker that doesn't count as an ad served to that IP address, correct?

Ya know, someone could write an adblocker that says that the ad was served and not display it. And that's not the greatest ad pricing model either.

Just sayin', not trying to start a flame war. As I said, I do see and ignore the ads right now, like one is apparently supposed to :?
  • reason why i posted this is to get awareness to folks who use ad blockers, independent sites needs ad support :).
  • unblocking the ads.
  • the site looks all stupid now.
  • there we go.

i better not see you driving a brand new bianchi anytime soon.

    there's a "donate" button somewhere?

I don't block ads...I have a site that runs ads that are both paid per-click and per-impression, and I know I would probably just abandon the site if it weren't for the bit of revenue (which mostly gets rolled back to charity, but still...)
