Left Turns From Flatbush To Park Place
The DOT is making changes. I have to agree, this was always a dangerous turn.
From the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development site:
In order to promote safety for all modes and alleviate congestion on Flatbush Avenue, NYCDOT will be instituting on or around April 15th a full-time left turn ban southbound on Flatbush Avenue to Park Place.
After the ban, Park Place eastbound can be accessed via a right turn onto Seventh Avenue and a left turn onto Park Place.

Given the line of cars that often piles up in the left lane due to people making that turn (or stuck behind those) I've often found that the above can be much faster anyway.
Just like in Joizey, sometimes ya gotta turn right when ya wanna go left.

When going down Flatbush, I always make a right onto 5th Ave then a left onto Dean to cross Flatbush, makes life much easier.
-
so, now folks on Flatbush won't ever be able to turn left by actually turning left!
they never could at Atlantic.
now they can not left on 6th or on Dean.
What's left, St. Marks? -
Right.
-
You already can't make a left turn onto St Marks from Flatbush. To get onto St Marks you have to turn right at 6th Ave and turn left into that little triangle in front of Flatbush Farm and proceed across the avenue with the light.
At the end of every month there are cops parked close to that corner pulling tons of drivers over for turning left. -
Yes, as things currently stand there is no left off Flatbush from Atlantic to the Circle. Its going to get more interesting when they get rid of the parking on that stretch of Park and add the planters/seating/pedestrial plaza area in the current parking lane. Since its a short block on 7th and a short block on Park I expect plenty of fumes for the seated patrons to breathe in as the traffic backs up.

When is that scheduled?
...which means its all about:
1. Taking Adams Ave/Bourum Place to Atlantic, the taking a left.
2. Eating lunch in your car as you wait to get thru the infamous intersection of Flatbush and Atlantic. (already a good place to meet bottled water sellers who deliver). Note to operators of pushcarts: Surely you can design a cart to fit between the line of cars. Excellent business opportunity.
3. Then, finally taking a right on Vanderbilt to get into "the neighborhood behind the arena parking lot" (formerly known as Prospect Heights) -
Don't know when exactly, but this is the story from the Brooklyn Paper last year. Sounds like it is supposed to be contemporaneous with the change in the traffic patterns which means maybe this summer?

When I had to do that grind, coming off the bridge I found it was easier to turn either onto Myrtle or Fulton, then come down whatever N/S thruway I needed

Given the circumstances, should you find yourself screaming on Atlantic:
Take a right on Third Ave, then a left on Union thru the slope and GAP is also an option. -
Honestly, all of this crap just makes me think that they put crack in the water over at DOT. Which part of these plans are supposed to make it easier to get around in NYC? If the goal is to make traffic on Flatbush flow FASTER on Flatbush, this will do that, but I really thought folks wanted to make it SLOWER so as to be more pedestrian friendly (didn't we just go thorough a tragedy on this street?).
Bike lanes on bus/truck routes, reducing traffic capacity, and making it more difficult for trucks to navigate east of the Hudson (where that is the primary means of goods movement) just seems like they are all at odds with good transportation policy. -

where do i sign up to complain about this !!
thats bullshit !!! no lefts from almost myrtle ave till you get to G.A.P. !!!
its the fastest way home when in a cab drunk @ 2am
or in a car with your mother n law just talking you to death !!!
or even reading some of the shitty opinions of some of the posters on this board !
(no names)
but for real wtf made them think that this is a GOOD idea ! ??? -
You are aware that dot is why there continues to be cars in prospect park, right? This isn't a dept of geniuses

The DOT is also the same brain-trust that agreed putting a stadium on the most congested intersection would not have a negative impact on traffic.

And that putting a stadium on top of a train station where 90% of the trains are above capacity at all hours would provide access to public transportation. -
Most drivers throughout the US have not been able to make a left turn decision for years. High traffic left turns are controlled using left turn only signal lights that tell the driver making the turn when it's time to turn and when it's time to wait.No daredevil I think I can make it BS. Many sketchy corners are corrected after there is loss of life or somebody with a ton of cash leans on the city. Correcting Hansen Pl at Flatbush has finally been fixed. The island at the junction of Carlton/Flatbush and Park should be eliminated. As well as the junction island Flatbush/7ave/Park. These old school street designs are too far out of date to be of any use.

Oh the joys of not owning a car!
-
This is an excellent improvement. Anything that reduces the traffic on Park Place is welcome.
I also suggest to ban right turns from northbound Flatbush onto Carlton. This would solve the issue of cars running the stop sign as they cross Park Place.
And add another speed bump on Park between Carlton and Vanderbilt!
