Looking for a sweet dog

I have had my dog for 17 1/2 years. He is getting weaker and weaker by the day. It's quite devastating. I love him to death, but am now thinking about getting a new dog to have here in case of, well, you know. I don't want a puppy, but a 2-3 year old boy or girl who can get along with cats as I have two. The younger of which will be broken as they are best friends. Any leads would be great.

Thanks!

  • Go to Sean Casey. He has plenty of great dogs for adoption. You can go there and volunteer to walk them until you find one that is the right fit for you. He's also pretty good about working with you if you take one home and there is a problem. Here are a few that he has up for adoption. They are pretty good about updating the website, but new ones come in all the time in case you don't see one here that "speaks to you"

Sorry to hear about your old guy and am happy to hear you are considering adopting another one.
  • Please consider delaying the introduction of a new dog at this time.

Your dog now needs the comforts of the familiar - introducing a new dog would only disrupt his routine, pecking order in the pack and really impact his final time with you. Also, since the new dog will bond with your older baby, the new dog will also go through a grieving period. Not quite fair to either dog. When we merged families, his younger dog bonded with my older girl and when she passed his dog went through about a six month period of grinding his teeth, refusing to eat and constantly searching.

IMO, I would wait a while. Focus on making your baby happy. You will know when you are ready to add to the family again.
  • Thanks, guys. I'll have to think about what you said Domino.
