Break-ins! Bikes Stolen at Washington and St. Marks
Between May 1 and May 5, our building sustained three break-ins by one perpetrator. The first robbery occurred on May 2 around 11:38 pm, when he picked/forced the lock on the front door, and proceeded to the basement, where he used a crow-bar to open the storage units. A bike was stolen, along with a bag of liquors. During the second entry, on May 3, around 12 noon, the man was disturbed by a tenant, and left the building. On his third entry, on May 5, around 10 am, he entered the stairway, and stole a bike from the stairwell.
We have clear security footage and images of the perpetrator. If you know anything about this man, please call the police, or send me a PM.

Very distinctive baseball cap, PIttsburgh Pirates I think, some sort of commemorative edition, big design on bottom of the bill, probably wears it often, not a cheap hat.

Subject: Break in on Prospect Place today too...
Yikes - there was a break-in in our building today!
4-story 8-unit building on Prospect Place (betw Vanderbilt & Underhill), I've lived here for 6 or 7 years without incident.
My neighbor (rear apartment) came home after work to find someone had opened a back window and come in via the fire escape. She thought the window was locked, so it was probably jimmied open.
They either hopped the fence in the backyard and came up or came across the roof and came down, it's not clear.
Made off with laptop, camera, some jewelry, a quick job, visible things.
This happened during that day while she was at work, and I was at home all day, albeit working on a computer with headphones on.
She's reporting it of course, but it still sucks.
So even though the weather is nice, make sure you lock windows when you're not home & have security grates where there are fire escapes!

That is terrible. We definitely have to step up the security in the area.

sorry to hear about this

The police said there have been a rash of burglaries like this all over the area for the past year, that the numbers have gone up a lot.
Also, they said while it's rare for the same apt. to be hit twice, the same building can be hit again. They warned that the guy may have taken to the opportunity to pick into other windows to note which apt to hit next.
Wish I could set some of those old fashioned spring-loaded bear traps about.

An update:
Ran into police coming out of our building with evidence today. Apparently the guy hit an apartment in our neighbors building yesterday too, also via fire escape in back.
They said on blocks like ours, if there's one building they can get into and out onto a roof, they can go from roof to roof and down the back fire escapes. They said it's rare they go UP a fire escape ladder since they clang and people in the building will hear it.
Also, a lot of people have done remodeling and often don't put back window grates, and the thieves seem to know that there's been a lot of that around, or people who don't lock windows, so lots of easy "window shopping."
They cops did come away with a dropped screwdriver that was found in the neighbors backyard and some other stuff, but somehow I think the best chances are to catch these guys (if it's a solo guy, multiple solo guys, or whatever) in the act.

Honestly I just want my bike back. Where do stolen bikes go? I mean there must be someone buying up a bunch of bikes nearby.

I'm so sorry you had your bike stolen. Unfortunately bikes are easy to sell on the street and there are lots of people who buy them with a second thought. I hope you do find it.
I know its a little too late but if you get it returned or get a new one I suggest that you register your bike at the local precinct. My husband was a bike messenger for many years and did this with his bikes. They would etch a number on the bike and affix a sticker to his bike which is almost impossible to get off. It makes it easier for a police officer to confirm a bike fitting your description is really your bike. It also prevents the person from claiming that the bike is theirs.
Crossing my fingers for you. -
Someone mentioned (on another thread?) that thieves will try to sell to delivery guys.
I have a friend that had a very expensive, one-of-a-kind bike that was stolen right off his deck in his backyard. He spotted it- months later, in PS (where he lives)- a delivery guy who'd try to cover it with stickers/whatnot. He recognized it though- called the cops, and ended up having to buy the bike back (for next to nothing, not even close to what the bike is worth). He's just happy he got it back.
