Romantic Restaurants

Can any recommend romantic restaurants offering memorable dining experiences in Brooklyn? Websites frequently recommend Brooklyn’s River Café and Manhattan’s Cassa La Femme North. When it comes to taking someone out for a romantic birthday dinner with a “wow” factor, what are the best (preferably Brooklyn-based) options?

  • there's that tiny place right over the PS border in PH. off eastern parkway? it's tiny, think it has a woman's name, chef/owner is a woman, looks like it's a small livingroom. about 8 tables, max.

anyone know which restuarant i'm talking about? really intimate and moody, candles, good champagne.
  • Noodle Pudding in Brooklyn Heights is one of my favorites. Great, reasonably priced Italian. Keep in mind it is cash-only, however.
  • I think the best for "wow" and romance is the River Cafe. The view is stunning. but it's damn expensive.

a much cheaper option is Convivium in PS - I think many folks in PH/PS would agree that it is a very romantic restaurant, especially the cozy table behind the bar by the window.

I'm sure there's something around Smith St. but I can't think of anything off the top of my head.
  • I can't think of anything with more wow factor in Brooklyn than the River Cafe, but for romantic I prefer cozier and less expensive.

I agree about Osteria Convivium. That's one of my favorite spots to go to when I can get a sitter.

I like the atmosphere of this place, but it's closer to Williamsburg.

Fragole on Court St. is a great inexpensive italian with a nice garden.

There's also Alma in Cobble Hill. They have a roofdeck with views of the city.
  • River Cafe wins the "Wow" factor hands down. As does One If By Land...in Manhattan. But neither of these can compete re great food with the ones listed below.

For intimacy and great food I recommend:

Saul in Boerum Hill (a Michelin one-star!) http://www.savorynewyork.com/wiki/Saul

    ICi in Ft Greene http://www.savorynewyork.com/wiki/ICi

The Grocery in Caroll Gardens http://www.savorynewyork.com/wiki/The_Grocery

Sette on 7th in PS - just ask Laura for a special table.

    I agree re Convivium also.
  • My vote goes to Convivium as well.
  • my vote goes to a picnic in the park
    with ants and everything

I might be the only person who feels this way, but I really disliked that place -- the one time I went, we were seated in a corner of the basement and it felt like being in a dungeon. The fact that my mother-in-law was with us may have contributed to my feelings of claustrophobia and gloom. But I would not rush back there.
  • does anyone know the name of the restaurant i referred to? i wish i could remember. i went on a date there with yet another man who turned out to be closeted.

no earthly idea - it's off eastern parkway in PH? near PS?

there's aliseo, which is small, but it's owned by a man (on vanderbilt). there's the islands, but that's west indian and up some stairs. there's sepia, but it's not a restaurant. those are the few places I can think of that are REALLY close to eastern parkway in PH, but none of them are quite right. :?
  • Gen? on Washington, but that's sushi

Franny's? on Faltbush - owned by Andrew Feinberg and Francine Stephens. Pizza from heaven and Italian.
  • nope, none of those.

my friend who knows is out of town but when she comes back in a couple of days i'll ask her; it's fantastic and small and intimate
  • Garden Cafe is small and intimite with terrific food and it's on Vanderbilt. It's owned and run by a husband and wife team. He's the chef and she works the front of the house.

I agree with many of the recommendations above- Saul, River Cafe, Convivium. Applewood would be a good bet also.
  • now i just need to find a date to take the ladies to these places you guys mention.
  • Thanks so much for the awesome recommendations! I've never been to any of the restaurants discussed here and appreciate all of these helpful comments.

Excellent suggestion. That will happen another time. What are your favorite picnic foods? If we're talking Americana style, I cannot resist coleslaw and potato salad.

This is SO GREAT!!! Thanks for all of the links!
  • Favorite picnic foods? Wine, cheese, bread and meat. Did I say cheese?
  • after my experience with Miracle Grill on 7th Ave, you know I'm gonna send a shout out to them (http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4265)

Get a table on the patio if it's not too hot out, it's nice!
  • i finally have the name of the place: the garden cafe. which is rather misleading, i think, because the name sounds like a sandwich shop and it couldn't be farther from that.
  • looks like Carnivore wins the name that place contest

    hmmmmmmm....
well of course there'd have to be an apple pie
and some crusty bread and cheese and olives and
some vinegary coleslaw. not too sweet
on a blanket sitting under a tree at the top of a hill

i'm not crazy about the dill in potato salad. fooey

    you know what's really good?
    bologna. but oscar meyer bologna
    it's not romantic so ixnay

    wine. plenty of wine :D
from the liquor store in WT outside the F train 15th Street stop
across from the kid's lopsided soccer field
they've got a fridge filled with wine
  • Do you mean the liquor store across from Farrell's? I hate that place! Shitty selection and high mark-ups.

Somebody should open a good wine store in this part of town.
  • naw you're wrong it's a great place
the cashier is always drunk with a red face
they have all kinds of wine, red and white
the fridge is icy cold even on the hottest days
and if you're running from work, it's just perfect

i mean yea if you work in the neighborhood
you'll go to a wine shop on 7th
  • i love the wine store down on 7th, between 14 and 15, i think. great people, great recommendations. far more selection than the guy across from farrell's.

as for potato salad, it needs dill and real hellmann's mayo
  • BP - do you mean Slope Cellars? I love them
  • i think so, don't know their name only know where they are. (altho they rearranged their selection and now i can't find anything without asking.)
  • Was there a German Sheppard named Greta or another dog named Otis in the store? Did they give you a punch card so that after 12 bottles you get one for a dollar?

Slope Cellars is on that block and they are fantastic.
  • i don't remember dogs or punch cards. i know only that you walk in and the register is on the left and there are two rooms, and the one in the back is brighter.
  • That might be the one on the next block. The register for Slope Cellars is on the right...although they do have 2 rooms. If you haven't been there, check it out. Super friendly, good wines, knowledgeable staff and plenty of bargains.
