beware of bike thief
I have had three parts of my bike stolen (around Underhill and Sterling) in the past month and a half, even though the bike was locked with U lock and chain. Avoid locking bikes overnight because there's clearly someone or a few folks out there who will steal anything off of your bike (including a 99cent bike light!). :?

well you just learned a lesson any bike commuter can tell you. don't leave ANYTHING on your bike. it's a pain in the ass at first, having to collect all this junk off your ride, but it will become routine eventually. if you leave helmets, lights or bags, even an unlocked saddle out long enough, you're basically giving it away to anyone.
also, where the heck does one get a $1 bike light? just about every light available now costs $10-$20, upwards of $50. another reason to take their security seriously.
in the end, you really need to take that bike inside. i hope you're at least locking both wheels and the back triangle. -

The vending machine at Traif Bike Geschaft, 99 S 6th St. -
I got the 99 cent light at a great discount store in Bushwick...Good advice bobbybrummel, thanks. I will never leave my bike locked overnight again.

yeah, bike theft is huge business. With craigslist, ebay, and flea markets, there is a huge market for bikes and bike parts. Add to that a huge bike boom in the area and no police enforcement, all of bike owners suffer tremendously.

I had 3 bikes stolen in my life time, and they were outside and I happen to see the dudes stealing it!!! I couldn't chased them down fast enough since they were on my bike. Locking it outside is asking it for trouble.
chances are much higher when bikes are lock outside overnight. -
definitely
even if you live in a walk up (as do I), please do not lock your bike overnight!! -
i.e. it's worth lugging your bike upstairs when the alternative is getting it stripped...
