The chart above is based on data from the “The 2010 Racial and Gender Report Card: National Basketball Association,” released today by the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports. The overall grade this year for the NBA was an A for “Race” (same as last year), with a grade of A+ for the sub-category “NBA Players.”

According to a news article titled “NBA gets an ‘A’ for diversity” from ESPN, ”The NBA still leads the way in sports diversity.”

Compared to the overall population, whites, Hispanics and Asians are significantly underrepresented in the NBA by margins that aren’t even close, e.g. whites are 75% of the population but only 18% of the NBA players, and the same huge disparities exist for Hispanics and Asians. For all three groups, their numbers in the NBA would have to increase between 4-5 times for their representation in the NBA to be proportional to the general population. On the other hand, black are overrepresented by more than a factor of six compared to their share of the general population.

Q: Just wondering, if this outcome gets a score of A+ for diversity, what would a score of F would look like??

In case you’re wondering who’s in charge of the Institute of Diversity and Ethics at UCF, it’s run by two white guys who are listed as the organization’s top two administrators. What grade do they give their own organization, especially for the category of “Top Management” (one of the categories they use for the NBA)? Would that be an F?

    This article and this post completely miss the point of that report.

    Download it and skim the original if you actually care about the topic.

    When the report says the NBA gets an "A" for race and gender diversity it's mainly talking about front office and management positions. Not the players.

    I don't know who Mark Perry is but his post was dumb.

    I'll keep posting until this country is beyond black and white race politics. which will probably not going to happen any time soon.

    remember colleges when they have too many asian student's they'll rebalanced it, this some how now turn into oh its besides about the players etc.. well hmm too bad colleges don't look at the professors and administers too, than asians wouldn't be single out. yes i'm making it asian issue. so when that happens NBA isn't diverse at all.

    White people just find anyone that isn't asian or white to be diverse. the term diversity these days means usually there is enough black people in there. other wise that term wouldn't be use. lets not fool ourselves. what have you white folks done in your lives that you feel so guilty about?

    facts are still facts. russia, us, uk, france, israel holds majority of the worlds weapons. that can't be argue against. why shouldn't anyone else have it?

    40% or more out marriage rates for asian females to white males. that leaves 60% that is almost half for asian males to marry. another fact. asian males have shortage of females to marriage in this country.

    and the majority of white females don't date asian guys. only 20% of asian males marry out. so numbers don't like no matter how you phrase it.
