Bars to visit alone? — Brooklynian

Bars to visit alone?

Are there any good places to go alone with friendly crowds? I just moved to the neighborhood and don't know anyone here...

I am 28 and female. Not necessarily looking to meet people to date, just a nice place to hang out and maybe talk to some people in the neighborhood.

  • I like Cafe Steinhof for this on 7th ave and 14th Street in Park Slope. A good place to sit at the bar alone, eat, etc. People and bartenders are friendly and you won't feel uncomfortable.
  • sepia is a good neighborhood bar. no pick-up scene, chill atmosphere.

    Underhill and Lincoln
  • Any divey-looking bar. Friendliest, most sociable places you could hope for!
  • I agree with Sepia -- or Washington Commons during Happy Hour.
  • Woodwork is a great place to hang out and they're open at pretty much all hours now that the world cup is going. You may want to avoid sat/sun between 730 and 430 if you're not interested in soccer though.
  • ...or anytime after 10pm if you're not interested in mougar ;-)

I've always wondered why that place is empty after 10, now I know.
    Thanks Christina
  • All y'all haters ...
  • Beast always has solo diners/drinkers, and they usually end up in a conversation with others.

True- and Branded Cattle Saloon across the street has so much conversation-starting kitsch, you're bound to walk out with new friends. Gay friendly, so you probably won't have to worry about being hit on....unless the ladies find you enticing.

Welcome- it's a great time to live in the nabe.
  • The best place for this is Tavern on Dean, which is closing.

Beast, I find, has very judgmental staff and clientele.
  • Also believe it or not, Soda. You can camp out there with a book like a lot of other people do.
  • I really like beast. I love the food and I think the staff is actually really friendly. But I wouldn't put it on the list of a place a single girl would go hang out by herself at the bar.

I'm curious- how do you feel you've been judged there?

I have- but then again, I'm not single and everyone that works there is a friend of mine.

I went in there once a few other "dudes" and a few women who I hope are regulars started joking with the bartender about us being there. My favorite soundbite was "I guess it's a frat party in here tonight."

I've been in there a couple times by myself and the bartender is absolutely "what do you want" to me and chatty with the others. I'm not going to invest countless efforts into trying to become a regular there. I don't meet that bar's expectations, so be it.
  • Whatchuwant,

don't get me wrong. I love the place and love the staff. I guess if she's looking for fun it's perfect. But for a single girl to go drink and be left alone? Not sure. Maybe some the regulars here can invite citymouse out to one of the bar nights?

    we invited her...
  • I unfortunately can't make it out tonight but I appreciate the invite and will try to make it to one of the future events. I think Washington Commons looks pretty well like the kind of thing I'm looking for and I also wanted to check out Hot Bird.

Any type of bar/crowd is fine with me as long as it doesn't draw a bunch of outright homophobes! I wish more ladies found me "enticing" because now all I get is men.
  • i third or fourth beast for solo drinking/dining. i've been doing it at least weekly since their opening. i often bring paperwork to do, but often end up in conversation with both strangers and regulars. i think branded across the street has a similar vibe. both spots have thriving queer representation
  • I will throw in another nod to Sepia, a great neighborhood bar for the last 6+ years.
  • plan b should be decidedly off your list :)

... It is off most of ours
  • When i first moved to the hood ( North Slope ) I went twice on my own to The Black Sheep Pub ( Bergen and 5th ) and both times ended up chatting to people at the bar who were really friendly ( not craziy, sleazy or drunk!) . There seemed to be several solo travelers there

    Then Beast is perfect. 8)
  • Plan B... don't you usually go for that AFTER a night out at the bars? Haaaa.

Beast is directly across the street from my current place (don't go stalking me now...) so I will definitely check it out ;) I've been to Branded and it was great. I like country music a lot, and lease a horse in fact, so I felt right at home.

In a couple of weeks I am moving off this block and more into Crown Heights, toward the Nostrand stop. Are there places around there I should look into?
  • should you achieve female dates, Plan B will not be required in any form.

    haaa.
  • I like to go to Franklin Park (St. Johns near Franklin) and sit outside and read or do paperwork. Not sure what you do, but $2 drafts before 5pm -- excellent for a teacher after a lonnnng day for sure.

I agree, Black Sheep always made me feel at home.
  • I went to Washington Commons last night. And within about 5 minutes of sitting there, some nice friendly person introduced himself and invited me to sit with a big table of friends. That was awesome. I'm looking forward to checking out more neighborhood places :)
