Pequena on Vanderbilt
I was hoping that it would open by the end of August, but I walked by the other day and saw there was a stop work order by the city. Does it have to do with this? http://fort-greene.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/13/you-asked-why-is-pequena-closed/

oh no!

there seems to be confusion....
The Stop Work Order was issued by DOB on the new place being built on Vanderbilt. If you read it, they seem to have done something wrong when constructing the vent shaft.
...this is not the same as the DOH violations that inpixels links to on Portland Ave. This restaurant has the same name, but may have no affiliation to the new one. -
the restaurants are related. see ongoing thread here:
http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=51783
but the dob and doh violations are probably not. -

Just went by the Vandy storefront and saw that the stop work order had been rescinded as of 1/29. Now it's a race to see which opens first: Pequeña or the country western bar being opened by the owner of Beast in the old Housebroken space across the street. We may have our four corners of bars yet!

Thanks for the update. Great news!
I'd put my money on Pequena opening first. We've been hearing about this honkey tonk place for so long that it now amounts to urban legend.
However, if I'm proven wrong (and I hope that I am), I look foward to running around in a circle, one drink at each place, over and over, getting so drunk that I'll finally agree the border of Crown Heights to be Washington Ave. -
People look like they have the pulse of these places..Minor Arcana? Are they taking a long financial nap or what? What about the steampunk movement ?WTF is up with the NYSLA?

Way Station (the steampunk place) was open for an event this past Saturday, and I went by (in full steampunk regalia). I hear they're set to open sometime in March. Mougar got the scoop sometime before he collapsed against their window.
I'm not sure what the deal is with Minor Arcana. -
I also heard Way Station in March. My friends are opening the honky tonk- they're in there working their butts off after getting all their permits together (hey, its hard to open a bar, work full-time AND play in a band)- my intel is that they too are aiming for March.

The SLA moves at a glacial pace. It is one of those state agencies that has not yet discovered technology so much of their process is hard copy paper (including all correspondence with folks). So you have to submit a couple hundred pages of application/documentation, they review, mail you a letter asking that you update several things, you shlep to their offices with more paper, they review, mail you another letter, you shlep back with yet more paper and the dance goes on and on. Its one of those things where you can pay an expert to help guide you through the process (expediter), but that means you have that much less money to spend on other items.
Its a long process and really, if you drink in NYC you should thank anyone profusely who goes through it. Its not designed to be easy or to be user friendly. -
"guide you through the process"
don't the good expediters just know who to bribe, and how much, in order to have the process move quickly? -
The gross incompetency of state agencies, not to mention their refusal to invest in the most basic forms of technology, is a shame.

agreed! and paterson signs my checks. i am part of the problem!!! state and city bureacracies are counter-intuitive/cognitive obstacle courses designed for the determined and/or those with mountains of cash and connections. i know both of these venues (beast/housebroken place and waystation) have been fighting the good fight, everything on the upandup, and things are looking optimistic for "spring awakenings." admittedly, however, i am still pining for the mechanical bull -- even an effin steampunk bull-train -- that i know will not happen

in pequena's case, they are the ones who decided to smash a hole thru their neighbor's wall and try to put an exhaust vent in the entrance to that building. glad someone asked them to rethink their plan.

Bill you are right. They probably should have been more considerate about the existing structure, the landlord and the people living in the bldg above their business. The city/state should not approve plans for all types of businesses(Way Station,Pequena. Minor Arcana, Honky Tonk and on and on)All these people played by the rules only to have the rules changed at some random time during the game. Submit paperwork, get permits, get inspections to make sure renovation is being executed as per the approved plan, correct deviations, get final approval and open for business. The fact that the NYC business climate is such that a random mood of some city A-hole can cost you@ 1-100,000 dollars is F't up.
The person who stamped approved on plans for Pequena's remodel should be held accountable for their F-up.The designers of the space did everything within the code, the construction personal ripped down and reconstructed things just like they did at the 50 jobs before only difference is a bug up some guys ass that comes to your address. -
sadly, this is EXACTLY how it works. not just for the retail/resto businesses but for anything mediated by dob. i deal with it related to mental health housing being developed by nonprofits. no diff. except the months of arbitrary delays and expense mean some poor soul is stuck in a state hospital or shelter until the city gets around to doing its job in a manner that is actually safe and habitable for potential resident and community. sigh.
-
Good for you, being involved with housing for the mentally ill. Very worthy cause.

who will be the first to eat from all four corners in one day??? Might have to add this to my life goals.
-
I'm not sure about eating, but I plan to be the first person to drink at all four corners in one day. Yes, my dream of "four corners of bars" has been realized.

But in what direction? Clockwise or counter-clockwise? And also (very) important, at what point should one stop going in circles?
Howdy, Stranger!
