Racooooooons!!
I came home this evening and there were straight up 6 raccoons hanging out in front of my building! They weren't that scared of me (my girlfriend thought they were a bunch of cats) and kind of just stared me down as I stood in horror. Eventually some more people came by and all 6 ran into what I guess is their "home," the crack between my building and the one next door.
I waited around a bit longer and they all came out of the crack one by one. I was scared shitless, but my gf thought they were "cute."
I guess I gotta call animal services or something right??

^ they won't do anything. I have had raccoons coming to my bedroom window in WT for 3 years. They scare the shit out of me, wake me up, hiss at my cats. It's really disturbing.
I've already tried dealing with 311. They say they won't do anything unless you tell them you think it's rabid (and even then, I doubt they do anything). Their suggested solution is that you call a private wildlife/pest control firm and take care of it yourself. -

You're a lot bigger than they are.
They smell your fear.
They are not punks.
They are bandits.
You gotta be hard if u wanna roll in BK.
Did your girl laugh at you getting punked by 'coons?
Now had you said they were foaming at the mouth snarling, wobbling from side, my advice would have been to run, quick. Any rabid animal aint nuffin to muck wit. That's the only way animal control will come for them. Other wise if you want rid of them, you gotta get a permit and hire a licensed trapper.
and for the person that said poison, that could be one of you beloved reincarnated. or it could be your racoon family in your future life. if he kills them off, you could never be and your soul, could very well, possible end here.
Tread lightly. -
The city does not handle raccoons. You have a couple options. Call an exterminator and pay about $300 for the removal of each raccoon. Buy a have-a-heart trap and catch them yourself (preferred method of disposal is dunking the cage in a trash can full of water for 10 minutes). Or the less legal method, buy a pellet gun with varmint pellets and take 'em out.

Call Cridder Ridders of NY, they just trapped 2 raccoons this past week on my block.
Ask for Giovanni 347-933-8380
Animal Control does ZERO, they consider them "part of the flora and fauna of New York City..."
Tee-hee. -
Don't listen to mantic, Sammy, he's (I assume he) obviously never confronted a raccoon in the wild before before.
When I lived in a suburban area I used to have to "chase" them off my back porch with a broom. I put "chase" in quotation marks because after yelling, clapping my hands, and rushing towards them did no good, I came at them with the broom and they kind of sighed and waddled away, still not in the least bit frightened, just highly inconvenienced. Call in the pros. -
I don't get it. Why can't you learn to live with them? What harm have they caused you?
-
They're vermin, cute from afar, but not when they open your trash cans, make a mess and attack your pets, eat your garden. Leave dung etc... plus they carry disease, namely rabies. There was one case this year of a rabid raccoon attack, that I happen to have read about.

No need to say anything more. -
ligh, i read that piece in the brooklyn paper and it says the trapper gives the `coons to rescue people? i was told (by the critter-buster man, who owns the critterbuster ambulance) that if raccoons are caught in the city they had to be euthanized.

No solid answer...
-
BTW, Trapper John, who has the "mobile ex-ambulance" is not really regarded as an expert...eccentric yes...
-
really? drat. i love that ambulance.

From the CCGH list serv:
Morning,A quick note we bagged another BIG RACCOON last night.
That's 3 so far and just from ONE backyard. I implore my fellow neighbors to call a trapper if you are experiencing issues like were are, share the "love" (so to speak) and chip in to save our blocks.
I also ask you to write our elected officials (CC'd on this letter) and ask them to begin to investigate which City Agency can help out the average Brooklynite in nipping this issue in the bud.
We are out several hundred dollars so far. Money we do not have to spend, but we must spend to keep our home safe and free of rabies, round worm, fleas and other bad stuff these buggers carry around with them or leave behind (pun intended) in their feces. We would hope others in the same situation will step up and do the same.
I will be working on a draft letter for our local electeds. We need to ask them respectfully to work on behalf of their constituency...and those folks don't include raccoons!
Enjoy your weekend. Remember to pick up a copy of The Brooklyn Paper. Tracey and my story made the front page. -
there's no "animal control" in nyc? when i lived in jersey they'd come if there was a sick sparrow
-
Nope, AC will just send you a brochure on how to hire a trapper...duh!
They feel raccoons, like pigeons, starlings, house sparrows and squirrels (to name a few) are part of the "flora and fauna" of the City (that's a quote).
Hopefully some of the CCGH folks are working with come of the local city council folks. Who knows. -
i say, have a block party and invite marty

Walking home last night on 23rd street between 6th and 7th I saw a family of raccoons exit by a run down house in the middle of the block and march across the street into the graveyard . They were very cute
