Pre-pregnant II: Good and Ready

Sorry, everyone, but I've got to lock this thread, because I'm having to delete about a dozen spam comments a day that for some reason are targeting this thread alone. Banning IP's won't fix the problem because they keep changing.
If anyone wants to continue the discourse, I encourage you to start a new thread (you can call it "Are You Pre-Pregnant Part 2." I really don't want to end the discussion; I just want to stop the spammers.
Anticipating that the spam will slowly grow in quantity and that removing it doesn't bring you joy... is there any way we can distribute the burden? Like e.g. the mob-rule on Craigslist of flagging posts seems to work pretty well. Flagging could at least shortlist or quarrantine stuff to make it easier for you guys... and get us closer to 24/7 moderation.

  • That's a great suggestion. Spamming seems to be a plague on some other NYC based boards also. I frequent Ask A New Yorker and it's been inundated with spammers recently.
  • I don't know if phpBB has that functionality. We actually do have pretty close to 24/7 coverage (though not in any formal way) between the various mods. Mods also have a way of notifying each other if spam appears on a board they don't have privileges for. A potential problem would be inappropriate flagging based on a disagreement (this forum can be a bit more heated than craigslist), but I'm not opposed to trying this if it's possible.
    Let's see what Andy thinks.
  • I would love to add buttons for flagging, best of, etc. but I'm not sure whether this is something that can be done simply in phpBB.

Anyone have any idea about "mods" that would accomplish this?? We used to be able to consult with daveb on these matters....

I started wading through the spam tools on phpBB but it's a real jungle out there.

I note the rating button. Neat. Maybe 'spam' could be one of those options?
