Cablevision - FIOS?
Would love to hear about user experience with FIOS in Prospect Heights. Is service better, worse or about the same as the other monopoly choice - Cablevision - Are the television choices equal or better quality.
When Cablevision's email server went off line for 24 hrs. this week, I new I had to look otherwise.

Cablevision has 100mbit service for a fraction of the cost of 50mbit FIOS. Their TV is missing some basic things (where's AMC HD?) but with usenet access it hardly matters.
Why are you depending on your ISP's e-mail relay? It's a tertiary service for them at best. There are commercial offerings that are far more reliable, both free and paid (i.e. gmail). -
And I would love to give you my experience and in comparing Cablevision and FIOS. Except Verizon, the slugs that they are, refuse to give my block in Prospect Heights, FIOS service. I can say however, that Cablevision is the absolute pits.

Cablevision is criminally bad unless you pony up and get their Boost service.

I've had optimum online and I/O cable for almost 7 years and in all those years only once did everything go out for two days because a construction company inadvertently cut the wire. Also I use their phone service and last weekend the phone went out but they were quick to respond and are very polite and helpful. Really I can complain about some of the TV channels I don't get but how much TV do I have to watch? Prior to that I had Time-Warner and I had nothing but trouble with their internet service. . . Fios is just not in every neighborhood anyway and you have to sign a contract . . . The only complaint I have about Cablevision is their store. It's a nightmare. You'll stand in line for an hour if you have reason to go there . . .

Actually, just last week I was walking down Underhill and Verizon had a table set up on the sidewalk with a guy and a computer who could tell you where Fios is and isn't. I assumed that since they' were set up on the street in PH, it'll be coming soon. -
knowing the evils of Cablevision, I always had Dish.
Recently I gave up dish because FIOS became available.
It's been mixed:
Good: I now have faster internet than I did via DSL.
I have insane number of channels, as opposed to simply "way too many channels" that I got with Dish
Bad: the FIOS box has to be rebooted regularly.
Installation was a pain in the butt.
I have yet to memorize my favorite channels, and keep entering the numbers that Dish used. -
Subject: No Clear WinnerR
Thanks for the info...I think the challenge is can we
w/out cable - just keep the internet & phone... -
@whynot_31: My FIOS box has not required a single reboot in 9 months. Something is either wrong with the box or your wiring. I actually had that problem with Cablevision and it went away when I switched to FIOS.
