Flatbush Key Food: Check your receipt! — Brooklynian

Flatbush Key Food: Check your receipt!

I recently heard about an investigation the Department of Consumer Affairs ran to ensure supermarkets were charging correct prices/taxes/etc. and they found only 48% compliance:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/html/pr2010/pr_081810.shtml

This led me to start checking my receipt when shopping and on 2 separate occasions have already found the Flatbush Key Food overcharging on the register compared to the sticker on the item. The first instance was a bag of potato chips, but I didn't notice the discrepancy until home so I didn't ask for a refund. However, I spotted it on Monday again for feta cheese this time, so I marched back to get my 30 cents as a matter of principle. I don't know if this is an intentional scam or what, but given the complete lack of customer service there, i wouldn't be surprised by this additional contempt for customers.

Just a warning to all. I know 30 cents here and there doesn't seem like much, but think of it over the course of a year and across all the customers who shop there.

  • It's not just supermarkets. I struck the same thing at Party City at Atlantic Terminal recently, the price at the register was different to the price on the shelf. I requested that they honor the price on the shelf, they said that was a sale that ended yesterday, I said that they should have removed the sale tag before they opened for business. Nothing pushes my buttons quicker than stores ignoring their advertised prices. When the manager refused to give me the price I left without buying anything and have no intention of returning.
  • It's not just the Key Foods on Flatbush....

I notice a lot that Key Foods doesn't bother to update the scanner when there is a special. For a long time the 1K of Fage yogurt was signed a 6.99 and was ringing up at 7.99 (or 5.99 v. 6.99, I don't remember, but you get my point.)
  • Very good points - I am definitely checking receipts at all places. I guess I was more in a mood because the service there is always so lacking (so sorry customers are interrupting the conversations between cashiers, how inconsiderate of us!) so it was just another travesty that they are overcharging
  • It's an imperfect world. I just checked my receipt from the Key Food on Flatbush and noticed that a box of oatmeal that was marked as $5.99 scanned as $4.59. I will not be returning to the store to refund them the difference.
  • this happens anywhere, even at the co-op. Always got to check the receipt.
  • DItto, Met Food, Key Food, all the local yocals, i.e. they are franchises...how about the green grocers. Big boxes too. I have taken to read the flyers. Also, Met Food has "specials" if you use their card but they never ask for the card. If you show your card the cashiers kind of sympathize with you, i.e., are you kidding?
The specials are at the top of the page somewhere and are in smaller print.
Yes, the Co-op makes errors so I ask for a "cash" receipt, check the receipt for errors and then use my debit card. If there is a mistake and you paid by debit you have to go up to the office for a refund.
    Good night.
  • You should call the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs and report the problem. The store is in violation of the item pricing law.

True that. The difference at the coop, as I recently learned, is that the computer always has the correct price 'cause it's pegged to the ordering system and is a flat % above wholesale. there's a scanner by the carts to check prices. sometimes those shelf labels get a little messy...

Unless we're talking about operator error, like an accidental double scan -- that was happening to me a lot. If the transaction is already finished when you catch it, you take the slip to the office and they fix it. I don't know the thing about "cash receipt" StoopLady - I pay debit, but I think I always get an itemized slip without asking about it. ?

Anyway, at least at the coop, I *know* they're not trying to be slick with the pricing.
  • RE: Coop "Oops" on receipts.
Yes, sometimes the check out worker double scans, esp. if they are on their phones or new (do it myself after almost 20 years). Sometime the check out worker guesses or doesn't know what the produce so (without sounding too creepy) I will say what the produce is before it is scanned.

I also pay debit but...pay it at the front desk after I have checked the receipt. So, next time, tell the check out worker you wish to pay cash when checking out (it is called a suspended transaction on the check out worker's side).

IF you find an error on your cash receipt the check out worker can go right back in, correct the error and print out a new receipt. That way the office trip is unnecessary.
  • Subject: I shop at the Flatbush Key Food

I always watch the register when I'm checking out and have never had the problem. In fact, the manager and staff know that I'm a regular customer. Many times, they have alerted me about sales and special offers.

Unlike some supermarket chain stores, the staff are friendly and helpful. They even say "thank you," something I rarely experienced at Dagastino's or Fairway.
