Vanderbilt Police This AM

i don't know what the deal is, but the same thing happened yesterday, too. I thought maybe it was a funeral procession for a cop at the time, but happening 2 days in a row? It must be something else.
-
Hey, is your name supposed to be "on and on" or "Onan Don?"
-
If its 2 days in a row sounds like an emergency response drill to me.
I see these very often in Manhattan.
Usually its done pretty quickly though if its at slow speed not sure what that would be. -
on and on...though i don't really have a good reason for it except that commenters tend to go on and on and on and on...
-
They were out again today, except this time they didn't go straight up Vandy but turned down Park Place towards the precinct...but they didn't go to the precinct. Very curious....
-
They are still here, hanging around on Vanderbilt. I walked by a couple of hours ago and saw a policeman taking a cigarette break. Is that even allowed?
-
Seriously, what's the deal? Not only have about 10 cop cars all lined up on Vanderbilt Tuesday-Friday around 11 am... But there has been a "Mobile Command Center" truck parked on Vanderbilt ave for the past 5 days, 24 hours a day. The truck constantly has flashing lights, and seems to move forwards or backwards a parking spot or 2 every day. Only occasionally is there anyone in the truck, as far as I can tell. Also only a couple of cops around during the day (after the police car line takes off).
Anyone know what's going on? -
The owner at Maya Taqueria told me yesterday that there have been a couple of hold-ups on Vanderbilt recently. Maya, and a couple of the bodegas that are open late were hit. So I guess the police are beefing up their presence in response.
-
A friend of mine spoke with one of the officers. Apparently there have been 36 robberies in the last 28 days. Mostly apartments, hadn't heard about bodegas getting hit. Cops are on the lookout and when you see a group of them I believe it is because someone has just gotten hit where they are congregated. One burglary took place when an air conditioner was pushed into a window on a first floor apt. So be careful out there PHers! A few months ago people were breaking in from above using roofs and fire escapes too
-
I notice them today dnd went oh yeah they posted about it.
-
Yeah, so right now there are nine cars on Vandy (from what I can see out my window-- part of my view is blocked) from Milk Bar to the mobile command unit which is now parked outside Met. There are about 20 or so cops standing in a tight cluster in front of the laundromat, and they look like they're having a meeting/briefing of some sort. They're all holding papers and four officers (two of them in white police shirts--captains? chiefs? lieutenants?) are addressing them. I'm sort of law enforcement impaired, but I'm sure someone around here probably has an idea of what's up.
Oh, and while I was writing this, they just parted ways and they're all in their cars now. The two white shirts are still in front of the laundromat. -
Reported burglaries are up some 600% (that's right...six hundred) for the 28 day period in the 77.
-
all those laptops and other electronic gear......
-
Exactly.
-
are the perps kids or pros?
....are burgalaries about to go down now that crimes in the schools are about to go to go up again? -
Wow, that's nuts. I wonder why 600% all of a sudden.
-
That's crazy! What are the details of this? What time of day are crimes happening? How are people getting in?
-
Here's a hint...Adrian Schoolcraft.

I talked to an officer at the precinct on an unrelated matter yesterday, but he also mentioned the robbery issue. He said they are almost all getting in via unlocked windows off fire escapes and then walking out the front door. Mostly happening mid-day, when people are at work. -

hmmmm. I do always like a riddle.
Maybe the new Commander (and other officers) at the 77th pct have decided the oppositie approach of Adrian is the way to go?
i.e. The stats had been undercounted for a long time, and now they are being counted. And, as a result, it appears that crime has made a huge jump?Causing it to appear that there has been a spike in crime, and forcing cops to spend quality time in an RV?
Am I on the right track? Do I need more hints?
Surely you are familiar with the "getting warmer" and "getting colder" guessing game one plays with 10 year olds. -

Ha! It's like a real-life detective game, at which I horribly failed until:whynot_31 wrote: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2010/02/02/2010-02-02_precinct_probed_for_fudging_stats_li_say_bklyns_81st_wanted_to_improve_its_crime.html
Ah! Thanks, whynot!
So, 600 percent also contains a, how shall we put it, market correction in addition to a true increase. I *guess* I feel a little better, but I'm not at all down with the idea of under reporting crime.
Also, great police presence on parade day. I mean that seriously. There's another thread complaining about the parade noise, but I really felt like NYPD was looking out for the neighborhoods around the parade route. Thanks. -
Also, the NYPD seemed to have a more restrained hand this year, both at J'Ouvert and at the parade itself. Kudos indeed.
-
there are a ton of cops on vanderbilt right now, and there were this morning also. what is going on???
-
Yea, does anyone know what happened yesterday? Sirens forever, then cops on Underhill and Sterling, Vandy and Sterling and then when I looked to the right on Vanderbilt from Park it looked like there were another five cars, a police truck and multiple ambulances around Dean/Pacific, all with lights flashing. Surprised not to see anything here - this was around 2:30pm yesterday (Monday).
