Any Futon Owners out there? Question

So we got a futon and with guests coming to visit we wanted to buy a plain dark brown washable cover for it. Found one at Target online, received it, it had that chemically-packaging smell so we washed it on delicate, Woolite, in cold water (directions said it was machine washable). The bastard came out faded and with streaks of discoloration.

Needless to say we are retuning it. Do you have a futon and what kind of cover has worked for you? Will any type I buy, that is all cotton and machine washable, come out with streaks and discoloration after 1 wash?

    My futon cover survives washes.

    ....try a more expensive place, there is a good futon place on Flatbush near 6th.

    Actually we gave up on the futons years ago. We opted to buy an aero-bed from Sportmans Guide. It was $59.00 for the queen size, regular height and has the motor within the bed. Inflates in less than 3 minutes! Every single one of our guests has LOVED the bed and has gone on to buy for themselves. We use the same sheets as for a regular bed. Less space than a futon, more comfortable than a futon and way cheaper. Just an option if you have the time/opp to return.

    After looking at Google streetview I found the place: Futon Furniture Gallery on Flatbush just above St.Marks

    But it seems to have closed, I called the number and it was basically disconnected (I got an operator message) Googleing them some more didn't show a listing for the Flatbush ave store anymore. LAME!

    I slept on one of these when visiting a friend a few years ago. It was definitely more comfortable than a futon. I'm not sure how well it would survive the onslaught of the demon cat though. :wink:

    I threw out 4 aerobeds a few weeks ago. Even without cats, they don't seem to take my weight for more than a few uses.

    I saw that Flatbush futon store open a week or so back when over there. I was also going to suggest getting a cover there.

    Also, as far as guests, we just use regular bed sheets on our futon mattress for guests. Btw, the futon mattress we got (the thick nice one) is very comfortable and I prefer it to the aerobed for comfort for the aerobed is much easier to store.

    Forgot about the demon kitty factor. Interestingly enough, our little demon spawn has no interest whatsoever in the aerobed - she high tails it out of the area whenever she hears the motor start up. The two boxers are not interested either.

    Before we discontinued the futon, I got a sheepskin mattress cover from Lands End which we used on the futon. We would keep the cover on at all times and then slap the regular sheets on when guests stayed over.

    The mattress cover has now been re-cycled yet again as a doggy bed and backseat doggy covers in the car. Damn that thing held up for YEARS.

    We leave the futon as-is when people are sitting on it, and then when we lay it flat to have people sleep we just use a fitted sheet like it was a regular bed.

    it was open when I drove by it today at 6:30 pm.
