Walmart in Brooklyn? — Brooklynian

Walmart in Brooklyn?

Hey everyone, so Walmart has recently been speculated to be searching for a location in Brooklyn to open a store in. At the least, they're eying the Gateway II shopping center near Jamaica Bay. I'm curious, what are your opinions on the idea?

  • I don't go to Gateway shopping center very often so it's unlikely that I'll shop at Walmart if they open there. That said, I have no objections, they might take some business from the crappy dollar department stores, but given that most New Yorkers don't have cars, they're unlikely to take a huge amount of business from local businesses.
  • Just say no to Walmart!
  • I wonder if a Walmart would be placed in the Atlantic Yards complex if the arena didn't work out. Just a thought.
  • Update: Walmart's rolling out their 'urban strategy', which involves smaller, convenience-style stores. It's interesting these news stories and speculation are breaking out, considering nothing is set in stone yet. The higher-ups still have to meet to make a decision.
