Mail in Prospect Heights
Anyone else have issues?
First a package I was sent *disappeared* from the post office, according to the manager.
OK, fine, I can believe that's a one-off. But I do not receive mail on a regular basis, more like every three days (and then it's a big pile o'mail).
I know this is silly but before I moved here, I would get my Netflix DVDs on the exact day Netflix predicted - sometimes BEFORE! Now, I get them three days later. They're only coming from Queens!
I searched the boards and it seems people have had these issues in other neighborhoods, years ago. Am I the only one with these issues now in PH?
Here's a link to the inquiry section of the USPS website, for what it's worth: http://faq.usps.com/eCustomer/iq/usps/request.do?create=kb:USPSFAQ&forward=inquiryType

Subject: Post Office
in my 40 years on the block It has always been about as bad as the mail system can get. And the people at the Fulton Street Station are among the rudest imaginable-- a trophy formerly held by the branch on 7th Ave at 2nd St. Our somewhat permanent mailman will not answer us if we ask a question. It is as tho we don't exist. A lady with my house number on Prospect brings me mail she gets and I give her her mail. I guess it is easy to confuse Park Place and Prospect Place.
Urban mail is one of the great trade offs for city living-- that and the banks. -
@saintmarky - yes, i have definitely noticed a change in the past few weeks. my mail, if it shows up at all, goes into my neighbors' boxes instead of my own, even though all of our boxes are clearly labeled with our names. several of my weekly magazine subscriptions fail to show up on a regular basis as well.
perhaps it would help to call and file a complaint with the post office. i've done that twice already. -
We often receive mail for our apartment number in another building (once for a building in a different zip code) so I can only assume that some of our mail is getting misdirected in the same way. To my mind the worst thing they do is deliver "Sorry we missed you" slips for packages without bothering to actually attempt delivery first- several times I've been home all day when this has happened and they never rang the bell. Pretty crappy but what can you do.

That happened to me a few weeks ago -- online tracking indicated my package was "out for delivery" so I waited around the house all afternoon -- but no delivery. At 5:03 (i.e. quitting time) the package was scanned online as "delivery attempted, notice left" -- which was total BS, since no one came by, and no notice slip was actually left. I called the complaint line (a polite and sympathetic woman, so obviously not connected with 11238) to reschedule delivery, and got it before 9:30 the next day. -
maybe someone could alert the post office to these posts--i know Met Foods (who does try very hard to improve...and listens and wants to be very community friendly) appreciated when I gave them printouts from here. Maybe the administrator can alert the Post Office. Not that they would probably care a ratz ass.

it doesn't take an admin to print out this thread -- any of you could do it! (EMPOWERING)
...however, i'd be quite surprised if anyone at that particular post office gives a shit. -
For a long time I had the same experience with package delivery - notices left with no actual attempt to deliver the package, when I was home at the time. I can;t easily get to the Fulton St. post office, either, so I started complaining as high up the food chain as I could get - from the manager of that local post office to Brooklyn's Postmaster General. Now they actually deliver the packages! (I hope I'm not jinxing it with this post).
Here's the number for Adelphi on Fulton St: (718) 783-2444.
It sometimes takes time to get through, but when you do, ask to speak to the manager and politely explain what your situation is. Most of the time I found them responsive.
Failing that you can file a complaint at the main number: 1800ASKUSPS - 800-275-8777.
We also always tip our postman at Xmas with a bottle of wine (I think they are prohibited from accepting cash gifts). It can't hurt. -
I would tip my postperson if s/he ever showed up!
Call the number or make an online complaint - both go to the higher ups. -
once when retrieving a mail item from the Fulton post office, the postman at the post office suggested (actually he didn't suggest this he outright said---) that I chase down the mail truck to retrieve my mail.

Of any place I have lived, the mail service in Brooklyn is the worst. I'm fortunate to be able to have packaged delivered to work, which is what I often choose to do.
-
We have gotten horrible service here for years but it does seem to have gotten worse. I have previously lived in Manhattan and other cities large and small in different parts of the country and never had service as routinely bad as in 11238. Our mail is frequently delivered to someone else's address, mail for others ends up in our box and several times recently mail sent to us at the correct address has been returned to sender. We have called the Adelphi office and sent in complaints online at usps.com. We have gotten dozens of variations of "sorry for the inconvenience," but service still sucks. There must be some way to get to a higher authority and have them shut down Adelphi and start over from scratch.

Complain! Make noise to the proper authorities! Commiserating here is nice, but it won't change a thing.
-
i agree and i've done that. my question is what's next? who is the immediate supervisor of the adelphi postmaster? i think we as residents of a longtime dysfunctional zip code need to kick our complaints up to the next level. is it the brooklyn postmaster general? i don't know. i'm seeking advice here or at least trying to get a discussion going on where to direct our complaints where they might do some good.

In my experience, complaining to the USPS doesn't change a thing. What are our alternatives? Nada! And, they know that.
I heard from a friend that a neighborhood association (or maybe it was the community board) in Windsor Terrace published the phone number of the local PO so that people could register their complaints directly with the postmaster. The postmaster went ahead and changed the phone number. Nice! -
Here is the response I received when I complained about lack of delivery for several days:
I regret learning of the inconvenience you have experienced regarding non-receipt of a daily delivery.
Regrettably, when such instances are brought to our attention, there is no sure way of determining what may have happened. With the large volume of mail moving through our network each day.
Be assured this matter will receive my prompt attention. I want to personally apologize on behalf of the Postal Service. As a customer, you have many choices and we must provide the level of professional service you expect and deserve. We regret this experience, which does not reflect the service we want to provide
An apology is no substitute for good service, but I want to offer one on behalf of the Postal Service. We appreciate your reporting this matter to us. It helps to know the kinds of difficulties our customers have so we can work toward improvements.
Thank you for choosing the United States Postal Service.
Sincerely,
11238

At one point I looked up the mailing address for Brooklyn's postmaster general and sent him a letter of complaint as well.
