Homeless man encounter on 23rd St 10/22/10
From the CCGH listserv:
Greetings,
Mic and I woke this morning to find a homeless fellow camped out on or front porch. We went to grab the paper around 8am and saw a 30-something white guy with a crack pipe hunched over on our stairs.
When I opened the door to confront him (and get our NYT!), he leapt up, "thanked us" (for what?) and ran off down the street screaming absolute nonsense, with a slight Irish brogue too boot.
He looked to be in his 30's, green army jacked, tan pants over at least 3 layers of clothes. Dirty-blond graying hair with an overgrown mohawk. Black shoes. Well tanned face (or perhaps just dirty).
Checked out below our porch and he either spent the night down there, or had dumped out his pockets (still need to clean that up). No evidence he tried to gain entry into our home.
I have alerted the 72nd Pct. and They have said that if anyone has this gentleman on their property to call 9-1-1 immediately. Unfortunately vagrancy and drug use can lead to break-ins.
And I generally charge a fee if you stay at our house overnight
If anyone else has seen this fellow, or had a similar experience, please give me a call.
While we certainly have a few homeless folks in the area, never had to deal with one so directly.

More from the CCGH listserv. Getting more bizarre.
OK, this gets better.
Not 15 mins ago Mic grabs me and says the homeless guy is across the street, in Green-Wood, with a balloon in one hand, a beer in the other, staring at our house.
I call Green-Wood security. By the time they made it to the spot (after patrolling the area) the guy was running along the fence to Battle Hill, hopped the fence and began to come down 23rd St. towards me.
I called 9-1-1, and after arguing with the operator, as the guy stood in front of our home talking to himself, got the 72nd Pct to respond. He had walked down the block towards 5th Ave, so who knows. Will be checking with the Pct. later today.
Here's the kicker...I went to look under our porch to see if he had left something behind, thus coming back to out place.
He did. Two large garbage bags that he had stashed in our garbage can. Contents...well I thought clothing/possessions, drugs...body parts. Nope, garbage. Strong smell of Chinese takeout. I guess he was hungry?
So, we hope the 72nd Pct. picked him up. He was drunk as a skunk and talking loudly to himself. he now has a blue coat on over his other clothes.
Please call 9-1-1 if you see this guy again. Now we're a bit concerned he returned to our place...which is understandable.
Thanks to Green-Wood's security and the 72nd Pct. for the quick response.
Fun, fun, fun. -
Subject: homeless Guy
The Homeless guy was born and raised in the neighborhood . His name is James. His mother used to work at atlas bank on fifth. He sometimes sits by the train at 4th and 25th st. Lately he has been by Luigis, the mexican bakery and the bank. -
Well this is what matters
30-something white guy with a crack pipe hunched over on our stairs.
Addicts steal, lie, and assault. Family members and "long time residents" are not excluded: they need their drug of choice. It's good that residents are keeping an eye out, this person needs help. -
Is anyone able to contact his family/old friends? They might want to help him out before someone calls 911 and he's locked away.

Saw someone somewhat matching his description hanging in front of Roots yesterday; the day before he peed right in the middle of the sidewalk on the corner of 18th and 5th.
Howdy, Stranger!
