The homeless man going through the recycling
I'm posting because I was wondering if there is anyone else who is absolutely sick of the man who goes through the recycling late on Sunday nights. He makes symphony of noise doing this, clanging bottle, rustling through bins, dragging his big bag of cans and it goes on for a good 20 minutes. Over the past few months it's been happening between 11:00 PM and 1:00 AM, but last night it happened at 3:00 AM. (I live on Wyckoff between Court and Smith.)
It's absolutely driving me crazy and it wakes up my
whole family. Is there anything that I can do about this? Also, I'd really like to know who else this is bothering so maybe there could be some coordinated effort to have it stopped.

Hate to break it to ya, but there's more than one person out there going through recycling. If he's not doing it, someone else will likely take his place, so you might want to find ways to deal.
If you're new to the block, ask around. Someone may know him or there may be a block association that you can talk with.
You could make it easy on the guy, separating out the stuff that you know he'll want; he'll be on his way faster.
You could put your recycling out the morning of collection, instead of the night before. -
Once you put your trash out, anyone can legally root through it. If its a problem, talk to your neighbors abut placing the trash out early in the mornings instead of the night before. The other option is to bag the items that are redeemable separately so that whomever comes can just take that bag without rooting through the trash. -
Many of the professional recyclers know the local supers, and have an arrangement like Whyfi describes.
By doing so, the supers ensure that their building gets only the best service.
I'd see who the local super prefers, and inquire about arranging a similar deal for your building. -
Recycling is a hard/dirty job and pays very, very little. Have some compassion and sympathy for the homeless that are struggling to get by. -

I gotta agree, let's come up with solutions that help this individual, and redirect their energy towards everyone's benefit. As your neighbor (and yes, the homeless are our neighbors), they deserve the support of the community. -
We put our recyclables in a plastic bag and hang it from the fence. it sometimes deters the "collectors". Sometimes not. There are MANY in the neighborhood, including an entire extended family of asian people

down in the south slope they come one after the other.. its not uncommon to get ten a night. There must be good money in recycling because one of them comes with his wife in a Ford window van.
The thing tho is trash is not anyones property once its on the curb it is NYCs property and technically the city can summons offenders for taking it once its left at the curb. They never do.
If you dont put the recycling out here we have them come into the private gates and rifle trhough the can and inspect to make sure they are not missing out on the benefits of ones garbage.
as to suggestions about helping said people.. perhaps forcing them to learn english, become citizens and to get jobs would be a start
