if this is true, my point of the whole thing being nothing but theater security for the masses would be proven cause if its real security they would never turn that stuff off and stop molesting people.
Yeah, there are no problems today because backscatter machines are TURNED OFF at many airports and they are doing normal security procedures. Interesting that they'd rather risk people's safety than endure a PR disaster. By not giving people the chance to opt-out, they effectively take control of the story. Of course, by their logic, if there was such a heightened risk, then these machines should be used all the time (especially on a day when so many people are going to be flying). A move like this demonstrates that safety isn't their foremost concern; they just don't want to lose a big gov't contract. And of course, if there was some sort of attack today because the backscatters were turned off, then it's "See? We TOLD you so."

Are TSA Scanners Likely To Cause Cancer In Travelers?
By Phil Villarreal on November 24, 2010 9:45 AM 0 views
A Columbia University radiation expert says the Transportation Security Administration's airport body scans are "likely" to cause cancer in some passengers. The expert also said Department of Homeland Security-commissioned research, which found that the exposure to radiation is minimal, is suspect because it has not been peer reviewed.WorldNetDaily reports the expert, from Columbia's Center for Radiological Research harshly condemns the body scanners, citing a peer-reviewed paper that was published in October in the Oxford Journal of Radiation Protection Dosimetry:
"If most air travelers went through these X-ray scanners, then it is indeed quite likely that there would be some number of cancers produced by the radiation," he concluded."Skin cancers are a particular concern, because the low-energy X-rays used in these scanners deposit a significant fraction of their total dose in the skin," he said. "In general, children are more sensitive than adults to radiation, and that's true for the endpoint of radiation-related skin cancer too."
However, he does say the risk of going through the scanner once is "minuscule."
And even the peer-reviewed study the expert cites for backup states that "calculated effective doses are well below doses associated with health effects."
Scientists at UC-San Francisco have reportedly written the White House, saying that "There is good reason to believe that these scanners will increase the risk of cancer to children and other vulnerable populations" and "that the potential health consequences need to be rigorously studied before these scanners are adopted."

My concern is that the TSA is focused on things like feeling up passengers and is not stopping things like this http://articles.cnn.com/2010-10-14/justice/new.york.airport.cocaine_1_baggage-handlers-airline-employees-airline-workers?_s=PM:CRIMEThose same methods could easily be exploited by someone who was up to no good. As you can see from that article the entire enterprise was in operation post-9/11.
And this is by no means an isolated incident. If you google drug smuggling and any major airport you'll see the same thing, including cases where TSA employees are involved

So, rather than putting kids under twelve on the no-fly list because they share the same last name as someone who may be wanted for suspicion of terrorism, why not focus on making the process harder for people to take advantage of?

Authorities said that the TSA officers — two in Florida and one in New York — were paid to help drug couriers move pills and the stacks of cash they generated through airport screening systems. One of the police officers — a Florida state trooper — took drug money to travel to Connecticut, where he provided "protection" to a courier selling thousands of pills to a dozen or more lower-level dealers, authorities said.
yup, if the terrorists are smart, they will disguise the bomb as drugs.
...there is no need to buy a Burger King outfit and die for the cause.
