  • Oh, The Brooklyn I Knew

Oh the Brooklyn I knew. People all knew each other on their block. Kids called women Mrs. or Miss., Men were sir or Mr. The Cop on the beat knew your name and he knew your Father. When you did something real wrong in your neighborhood, EVERYONE knew WHO DID IT! If you broke a window playing stickball, you rang the bell and told the neighbor “please get it fixed and we will pay for it”. Because of our honesty, seldom did the neighbor actually ask for the money. Your Mother sent you to the corner grocery for milk and a loaf of bread. The Grocer put it on your family tab. If there were elderly people on your block, people pitched in and shoveled their sidewalk when it snowed. When there was ice or packed snow left after you shoveled your walk, you put ashes from your coal stove on the sidewalk to keep it from getting slippery. Just about everyone went to a house of worship. Catholic & Protestant to Church and Jewish people to the Temple. While I was a Protestant, so many of my friends went to Confession on the way home from school and I would wait in the back of the Church. The Priest thought I had no sins (or so I thought) because I never went to the booth. We had three cars on the block and the owners knew not to park in the stick ball area. At least not between the two sewers. NO ONE went hungry. Maybe it wasn’t steak & lobster but everyone had food. If someone caught a mess of fish, all the neighbors had fish dinner that night. I wonder how much Brooklyn has changed????

  • Congrats to Kevin, what an honor....wish him good luck from all of us!!!

  • There is nothing like being in New York for the Holidays

walking around the City, the people, the lights, the smell

of pretsels and peanuts roasting on the corner stands....

The smell of Christmas tree's for sale in Park Slope and

seeing the stringed lights across 5th ave....brings back

    so many beautiful memories....

I remember my Dad taking me and my brother to pick out a real christmas tree by Timboo's Bar on 11st at night while it was snowing. We had to be about 12 and 14. My brother told me to hold the top of the tree while he held the

other end.....by the time we got to 15st I realized I was

the only one pulling the tree...he was hysterical following

me.... I wish I could go back to that time for a day

    (smiley with a tear)

  • Anna ....enjoy that snow tonight....sit by your window

with a cup of hot chocolate and lots of marshmallows

and just watch each snow flake fall...

    Terry ....feel better!

I had a crazy week ...Our maltese Cody needed emergency surgery the other day to remove a tumor from his eye that wouldnt stop bleeding.... $702 lata ....he is doing much

better but I think he has lost his eyesight....

then I had another kidney stone attack the day after his surgery ....at the same time my sister calling an ambulance

for my Mom. Thank God her vitals were all normal and she

didnt have to be admitted back into the hospital...

Today was a good day ...I managed to give my Mom a haircut

God forgive me for Iam not a Beautician!
