Hawaiian (Aloha) Shirts. — Brooklynian

Hawaiian (Aloha) Shirts.

I am a prolific collector (and wearer) of quality Hawaiian shirts (250 and counting!) and was wondering if there are any thrift or vintage clothing shops in Brooklyn that may stock these. Mele kalikimaka!

  • Do you really live is Australia? Because there are probably cool shirts there.

    Back to point: some ideas

MONK thrift, Beacons Closet, Odd Twin, the place on 5th ave between Lincoln and Berkeley.

  • He's moving here... right, spudee?

  • G'day Mamacita,

Yes, I really do live in Oz; in fact in lovely beach town in the sub-tropics, so it's shorts and Aloha shirts for us on Christmas Day! While there are many Hawaiian shirts available 'down under', I prefer the quality US brands such as Jams World, Reyn Spooner etc. and apart fronm good old Ebay, they are difficult to source here.

However, next year my wife and I hope to take up residence in Brooklyn for 6 months (a bucket list thing) so I am doing some advanced intel gathering before we go. Monk's Vintage certainly looks like it might be a great place to start so thanks for the heads-up.

  • I so want this guy to post pictures of his collection.

    Kailua Rocks!

  • G'day Whynot,

You are right, Kailua does rock and in fact my wife and I were there just days before the newly-elected President Obama rocked into the shopping centre with his family.

I have about 50 shirts hanging in our walk-in wardrobe and these I wear every day. The rest are spending 'time-out' (wife's instructions) in various crates about the house. I will try and take some shots in the next day or so.

As a side-line, I have met quite a few 'closet' Hawaiian shirt collectors in my area in recent years and we feel it's time to 'come out'! So we are thinking of starting an interest group called ALOHA (Aussie Lovers Of Hawaiian Apparel; kinda' cute I think) to share, compare and swap info on this fabulous 'hobby'. Aloha.

  • Hi. My wife owns a vintage clothing shop in Brooklyn and I shit you not that we're in Australia right now :pirat:

    Pm me.

  • I think I have worked out how to share some of the shots I took today of a portion of my Hawaiian shirt collection; so here goes!

  • Much thanks! ....a fine collection indeed.

....I was an KMCAS officer brat in Kailua during the 80's, and was one of six haole at St. Anthony's Grade school during 7th and 8th grade.
