Resigning a Lease — Brooklynian

Resigning a Lease

It’s almost that time for me to resign my lease… I currently live in a 2 bedroom rent stabilized apartment, where I had to provide every detail of my life to get… and I have a roommate.

The thing is my roommate is about to finish school and I am not sure if she wants to stay in NY. Just in case she wants to leave, I want to way out my options… I can move, get a new roommate or live by myself. The thing is I barely pass the income level to live in my building on my own. And I would like to keep the two bedrooms as I can sacrifice and pay for it on my own. Do you think they’d let me do that?

Or am I going to have to find a new roommate? Does my new roommate have to go through all of the checks that I did? I mean I am the main person on the lease, and I make up the main part of the income for the requirements, plus my father is the guarantor.

I just want to keep my current apartment… but I don’t know how I can work the system for this to happen.

Any suggestions….

  • I find that they're usually pretty loosey-goosey with people who are already in a building.
