  • The Patch's story is around a week late, and is less fun to read.

    ...still psych'd

  • >>>The kimchi itself is prepared in house and aged for eight months.

Kimchi Grill’s opening date has not yet been set, but in the meantime Lee said Brooklynites can expect to see the truck in Kings County in the near future.<<<

Hmmmm... I guess they will have to open 8 months after the place is renovated --- either than or not serve kimchi until 2012.

    LOL.

  • As per a source who spoke to one of the owners today (3/16/11):

    (paraphrase)

"We are going to open this store in a few months. We just don't have the manpower to do it right now, so we are going to use this location to supply our trucks while we hire more staff. We are going to have a truck in this neighborhood often, and it will sell food as well as advertise the new store"

  • i'll have to check this out...

    Snacking in Koreatown

"Koreatown’s big news is the opening of FOOD GALLERY 32, 11 West 32nd Street, (212) 967-1678, a complex of hawkers serving Korean riffs on Chinese, Japanese and American fare, as well as some traditional dishes, to a young, mobile crowd. Amid the ketchupy noodles and dull stir fries are a few streetwise gems, like the zhong zi at the stand run by the Taiwanese food truck[i][u], Bian Dang (formerly NYC Cravings)."

  • Whynot: "Hey, when you guys opening?"

Kimchi Taco guy: "About 6 weeks, mid June."

  • HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

    :chef:

KIMCHI GRILL The chef, Youngsun Lee, and his partner, Phillip Lee (no relation), will expand on the menu of the Kimchi Taco truck now that the chef, who made his name at Persimmon in the East Village, will have a proper kitchen. Bright, well-spiced Korean fare with a Mexican accent will include a kimchi quesadilla and kimchi barbecued meat burritos, which are not sold from the truck. (Late October): 766 Washington Avenue (Sterling Place), Prospect Heights, (718) 360-1839.

  • Yes, kimchi tacos sound like an excellent adult Halloween treat!

....one's breath is very scary after eating kimchi

  • "Late October"

    :bounce:

    Status?????

  • Continued Sightings:

    Cabbage delivered regularly.

Asian guys inside who are assumed to be Korean

Visits from Asian guy drives Kimchi Taco truck

    Not yet sighted:

    An awning.

A menu board or chairs inside.

A guy putting menus on brownstones clearly labeled "No Menus please"

    Conclusion:

No Change. Continue circling before being given permission to land.

P.S. Capt Morgan is looking a little weathered. He could use some touch-up painting.

  • Having more than a few menu items from the truck, I am sorry to say while the combining of Mexican & Korean styles of food is certainly innovative, the results are only fair. Two notches above dull.

  • This article published today by a Columbia student provides us with the proprietors names, but no firm opening date.

  • "they’ll be waiting for his kimchi when he opens up a restaurant later this month."

so let's call it soft opening 11/26/2011

will it open (initially) without an awning???

  • so, we will have Kimchi tacos instead of Thanksgiving leftovers?

  • yes we shall, yes we shall.

  • Besides the bar owner, other locals have popped in when they see the truck outside to ask when the restaurant will open.

The owner may be referencing me. I'm sort of famous!

  • why would you ever, ever open for retail w a grade pending. This is a truck stop for Kimchi trucks and nothing more.

If these guys try and open with the local talent pool the place is sunk. Stay away from retail, export your products and stay safe like everybody else selling anything in Brooklyn

  • I have seen no progress toward it becoming a restaurant.

I have not recently had the opportunity to talk to any of the workers about when that may occur.

  • Update! Plywood has gone up! Work permits have been affixed. It is getting a gut interior renovation and we are finally going to get bad breath!

  • Problems, problems, problems....

The problem that many people have with kimchi, however, is that it can be delicious.

  • therabreath wrote: for those who eat kimchi regularly, it is important to drink plenty of water. Not only does water flush many of the fermented food particles out of the mouth and into the digestive tract, but keeping the palate moist also slows the growth of odor-causing microbes.

Do you think this will be written in small type on Kimchi Grill's menu?

  • looks almost ready!

  • I am excited for this place to open but could be trouble to have something so delicious so close.

  • I saw the truck near Union Square last weekend and asked the guy if he had an ETA on the restaurant. I think he said end of the month or early April.

  • For a moment, I feared that Buffalo already had Kimchi taco restaurant and that Brooklyn would be perceived as less than.

    Now, I know better.
