Free concerts in Prospect Park

Can someone tell me how it works please? Do you just get there early and stand in line until the gates open to get a seat/close blanket area?

We wanted to spend the day in the park and then see the show, we will have coolers etc, can we just bring them in? The only thing the website said was no bottles or cans. I just don't want to bring anything that I would have to abandon to get a decent view of the stage.

Thank you!

  • You can totally bring in coolers, just no glass or obvious alcohol. We put our wine in nalgene bottles or the like. I've had them reject my chairs once, but I can't remember why.

  • The bigger the name, the earlier you want to get there to stand in line/stake out a close-in spot outside the fence. For the average night you probably can get your pick of seats/lawn area inside the fence by showing up soon after the gate opens or within like 30-45 minutes of when the show is going to start, but for a very big name (eg Talking Heads a couple years back), you're looking at an all-day commitment if you're interested in seeing a musician with the naked eye.

You can bring in coolers with any kind of food or beverage in them that are not alcoholic. If you want to chance sneaking in booze, be discreet. They're supposed to confiscate that stuff during bag check, but breaking the no-booze rule is incredibly common at these things.
