St. Marks Ave Block Association? — Brooklynian

St. Marks Ave Block Association?

A group of neighbors on the two blocks of Saint Marks in between Flatbush and Vanderbilt is interested in starting or re-booting a block association. We are hoping for a low-commitment, low-anxiety, get-to-know-your-neighbors, kinda thing. More to the point, we just want a block party!! (Next year, of course.)

Our understanding, based on communications with CB 8 and with the estimable Patty Hagan, is that there may have been an association many years ago, but that even if so it is now long-defunct.

We'd be interested in hearing from any and all of the following folks:

(1) anyone who knows or thinks that there's actually an active association on st. marks;

(2) anyone who is or happens to know any veteran who was previously involved;

(3) anyone with relatively recent experience organizing a block association; or

(4) anyone who lives on St. Marks on either of those blocks (or any block in PH, I guess!) and is interested in helping us organize or joining later on. Email us at [email protected]. Thanks!

  • The generally accepted method of forming a block association is to have a group of people who have elected three officers (president, vice-president, and secretary), followed by posting a letterhead of your organization's name and its by-laws to the local (CB8) community board. After you have been certified with the community board, you will also want to register with (Brooklyn) Borough Hall. There is, and still exists to the best of my knowledge, a civil servant whose job it is to aid in the formation of block associations:

    Burchell Marcus <[email protected]>.

    Contact him through the above email; he should be able to point you in the right direction.

    I hope this helps; if any info is incorrect, it is a mistake of the mind and not the heart.</[email protected]>

  • Thanks! We will do that!

  • Keep us posted (assuming those of us a bit past V'bilt are invited!

  • If you are interested in organizing the St. Marks Ave block association, please come to a meeting NEXT WEDNESDAY, July 6th from 7pm-8pm. Location TBA.

    The agenda is:

    1) Vote on By-Laws and discuss form of organization

    2) Elect tentative officers

    3) Calendar first general meeting

    At this time, membership will likely be limited to the two blocks between Flatbush and Vanderbilt.

    Please drop us a line at saintmarksblocks (at gmail dot com) to let us know that you will be coming, and we will be sure to update you with the meeting location.

  • The meeting will be at Soda Bar (back room), on Vanderbilt. See you there!
