questions about Martin building
Hi All,
I'm looking to move into an apartment at a building that's owned by Martin (Washington ave and St Johns pl) and we've heard mixed things about the landlord, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with him or his properties? Also, if you know anything about the relative safety of the neighborhood (or just any other general information) we'd love to hear it. Thanks!

Well, firstly, it's in Crown Heights I believe -- I think I looked at that exact apartment building a few years ago. Yuck.
All I can say is -- he's the worst. My apartment from him (on Franklin and Lincoln) was full of mice, cockroaches, and drug dealers. He received phone calls from a lot of the tenants in my building as well as in-person visits to his disgusting office (one time it was flooded with 3" of water and bugs were swimming around my ankles), calls to 311 when he wouldn't help with issues, and visits from housing inspectors. Told me I could hire an exterminator myself if it was "really bothering me". I spent a week without hot water and he would lock the door to his office when people would try to talk to him. I spent 2 weeks without heat in the winter and he said "he was working on it." Until the city sent people to see him, nothing changed. We got charged for electricity for the common areas because he refused to pay the bills.
He rarely answers the phone, claims to have posted office hours but will disappear for long periods of time, and is just rude once he has your deposit.Seriously -- I stayed 2 years because the rent was GREAT, but if you want a landlord who keeps the building clean, cares about the simple things like bugs/mice/heat/water, or responds to needs or requests, he's not for you. But if you want a cheap place and don't care about the above stuff, go for it.
ETA:
I still live in the neighborhood (3 1/2 more years since leaving a Martin building) and LOVE it. So I am not trying to tell you not to move here - but simply not to live in a Martin building.

hi there-I'm not sure about that landlord or his properties, but I live on St. Marks Ave. (under St. Marks Ave. Association, LLC) and ABSOLUTELY love the building and landlord. In fact, our landlord is located right across the street and we have a live in Super who is very ligit. I've lived in the same building for 3 years now and really have no complaints. Never had water, cable or heat turned off or any other landlord horror stories. The rate isn't cheap ($1,475 for a 1 bedroom) but believe me, it's totally worth it. Area is fantastic (restaurants and bars always popping up), laundry is across the street, they just opened a fantastic compare foods DIRECTLY across the street and in the process of opening a new diner at the corner. I mean really...I always recommend my building! Hope this helps ya.

Is that Elcorno Martin? I would advise you to do a google and brooklynian search on this landlord, and search the building's address on the city's HPD complaints database. For what it's worth, I have never lived in one of his buildings but have only heard negative things about him as a landlord, with the sole exception that some of his apartments may be renting at slightly below market (perhaps for obvious reasons).
Howdy, Stranger!
