The farmer's market on Saturday at Grand Army Plaza has a booth (near the library end) that sells nice looking houseplants.
BBG also has healthy looking stuff, but their selection has been really low the last few times I went.

Speaking of this topic. In my last place I had a little outdoor area and grew a nice selection of kitchen herbs. I have since moved to an apt. with only north-facing windows. My herbs died. I will not let nature get in the way of me having chives, parsley, mint, and basil on hand whenever I want.
So, does anyone know where I could get grow lights? I realize I might be the only person who want such lights to actually grow kitchen, cooking herbs.

Get yourself a membership to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and check out the gift shop. Membership I believe gives you 10% off.

There are plenty of stores just for lights in NYC. I'm guessing some of the hardware stores around here might have the bulbs you need for indoor plants, but if not, there's a bulb shop on B'way in Manhattan, somewhere near 8th St. I haven't been in a while but I can't imagine it has closed and they had everything.
Also, there is a stretch of light stores on Bowery between Delancey and Grand. I've spent a fair amount of time there looking for light fixtures, but now I'm remembering seeing plenty of bulbs, etc.

Thanks all, appreciate it!

I second Natty Garden, I love that place, and Joel (the owner) makes really good recommendations.
At the start of the season Natty also has organic herbs and seedlings if you're inclined to grow your own veggies.
We usually get our herbs from there, and the chives (planted 2 years ago) have so far survived the blizzard, tornado, earthquake, hurricane... -

inpixels,
I'm a horribly law abiding citizen. I actually do want to grow basil, but I was worried that people would assume weed, so I have been hesitant to ask.
But thanks for the link.

i too love natty garden, but its selection is tiny and their service, while friendly, has caribbean efficiency. last spring i discovered kings county nursery (525 new york ave., on the south side of eastern parkway) and thought they were pretty great -- large selection, good service, and the couple who run it seem to be decent folks and eager to please.
