Moving to Brooklyn, Need Neighborhood Advice — Brooklynian

Moving to Brooklyn, Need Neighborhood Advice

Hello, my roommate and I are contemplating moving to Brooklyn, and since the only two neighborhoods in which I've ever lived are the East Village and the Upper West Side, I have a few questions.

1. How safe are South Slope, Windsor Terrace and Sunset Park? Is it relatively safe to walk around late at night (1 am-5 am)? I am a night person (and I'm female) and I often stay at school/out with friends well past 1 am. I keep hearing mixed reviews.

2. About how long is the commute from Kensington and Midwood to the East Village? (We go to school in the East Village, and we don't want more than a half-hour commute).

3. Which neighborhoods would you recommend looking in the most if my roommate and i have the following criteria:

- Neighborhood must be safe enough for females to walk around late at night without having to worry too much about getting assaulted

- Must be no more than a 30 minute subway commute away from the East Village

- Apartment needs to be a 2-bedroom, and it must be no more than $2100/month

Thanks!

  • Hi.

Let me chime in about Sunset Park. If you live near the 36 street station stop, you can get to Union Square 20 minutes. Please beware I say that meaning during rush hour only. After rush hour or the early afternoons, the trains will sometimes take you locally (ie through all the greenwood heights and south slope stops.) This is especially the case after 10pm and before 7 am on the weekdays.

As per the housing. I used to be the biggest clubbing goth chick ever. I would routinely come ambling down 4th avenue after the clubs closed at ~4/5 am, or sometimes I'd leave early and arrive at the happy hour of 1 am.

I never felt unsafe.. EVER and this is is coming from me, a decidedly bourgeois chick who, if you look up my posting history, hates most "ghetto" style things. I can say all this with the safety of being a Black person and really understanding that Blackness is NOT the equivalent of ghetto mentality, as well as wanting to live like a "decent" person, rather than a ghetto hood.

Anyway, I will be moving from my pad in April, but I have since fallen in love with Sunset Park. I have already been shopping around and realize that for 1700 dollars you can EASILY get a 2 bedroom here. If you make sure to walk around each block to make sure your block is not block party or loiterer central, than this can be a great place. Even 4th avenue is great. There are nice new coffee shops (Green Fig, Sunset Perk,) a decent laundromat, Some decent restaurants (Eclipse and Maria's, although most are Mexican).

I don't want to live in a studio, and I would like an extra room, so I have decided to stay in Sunset Park, only to be VERY CAREFUL in casing my future block (hint hint: think above 5th avenue which tends to be more quiet and below 50th).

    Otherwise enjoy!

  • I have to agree with The Psychologist - and I am from a very different demographic (paler with wrinkles :-))Ten years ago a friend suggested Sunset Park when I was in Windsor Terrace. I drove around various blocks at 10 PM & primarily what I saw were abuelitas (Hispanic granmas)in sweaters walking home from prayer meetings & Chinese kids with book bags coming from cram courses - and that was 10 years ago! Now we actually have joggers and the NY Times is available in many bodegas. You can get far more space for your dollars in Sunset Park than Windsor Terrace, and from your self-description Windsor Terrace might be a little boring in its current iteration.

  • You might be able to afford a 2 bedroom in the middle of park slope. I rent 1 bedrooms for around 1750....so I believe that you might be able to find a 2 bedroom in your price range.

  • Windsor Terrace is the safer of those neighborhoods but the rent would be higher. None of those places will get you to the E. Village in 30 minutes. It takes me longer than that during rush hour to get from 36 st to Canal St (2 express stops).

I don't agree that Sunset Park or the South Slope are safe places for women to walk around late at night unless you can use the NY Times you bought at the bodega as a weapon.
