Kimchi Taco Truck

they've been parked at world financial center lately and the tacos are really, really good.
-
-

It should not be much longer.
-
so does this look like a chill place I can just walk into and grab some tacos or is this primarily a sitdown dining experience?
-
I think chill place with seating.
It would, however, be awesome if some of the ultra fancy, five star restaurants in NYC would have food trucks.
For example, I would have totally eaten from a Tavern on the Green truck....

-
Naah... while the food at Tavern on the Green was good, what made the place special was the atmosphere, which was truly unusual and lovely.
The last time we were there, a young man got down on his knees and held out a ring to his girlfriend just on the other side of the glass exterior wall; they then came into the dining room to a standing ovation from everyone there.
A truck just wouldn't be the same.
-
Yes, I suspect the differences between the Kimchi Taco Truck and the soon to be opened Kimchi Grill will be not nearly as stark.
For example, one may have a higher chance of getting unfavorable results if one uses the location to propose to their partner.
I'm ok with that.
-
Can't wait for this place to finally open.
-
The plywood is down! The front facade is a big rollup glass door, and they looked to be testing it last night.
-
The Kimchi Taco truck will be parked in front of PS9 on Saturday April 21st, from 11-6pm in honor of the Prospect Heights Craft Fair. It's Underhill between St. Marks and Bergen. Come check out the fair and eat a delicious taco.

!Woot! Opening tomorrow -1 Owner.

KIMCHI GRILL Phillip Lee of the Kimchi Taco truck opens a simple, contemporary-style restaurant. The chef Youngsun Lee, his original partner (no relation), is no longer involved, so it’s up to Michael Calderon to cook the creative Korean fare: dishes like kimchi quesadillas, ssam buns with spicy pork or beef, and barbecued beef burritos. The truck still runs. (Opens Thursday): 766 Washington Avenue (Sterling Place), Prospect Heights, Brooklyn; (718) 360-1839.

This could explain some of the delay

Went by today. The menu looks the same as the truck's. I got the bowl with BBQ short ribs - delicious, filling, and I got change back from a $10.
-
Ditto. Here's how it went:
I stated "kimchi burrito". I was asked the following questions:
Tofu, pork, chicken or beef?
white, multi grain or brown rice?
black or refried beans?
After answering, I then added a can of soda. I paid $10. I met the owner, his wife, and his two daughters.
About a minute later, I ate said burrito.
It was yummy.

The only thing I don't like about the Kimchi being open there is the bad news it brings to Los Muertos.
Too many damn burritos.
-
So delicious.
I think Muertos brings something totally different to the table. But one of them should be open late night. I'd order from either when drinking at Washington Commons if they were open really late.
-
Gave it a try last night and I will be back! I was offered a choice of a kimchee fried rice, which I opted for in my burrito. Love how they use the paper bowls. Hate buying food that comes in the plastic containers. I will have to split my business 50/50 with Muertos!
-
Just got back, and it was extremely good. We'll definitely be returning. Service was good too, with two staff coming over to ask how we liked everything. I was told to expect an expanded menu in the coming weeks, as they work to incorporate more things from the truck in the the restaurant.
I agree with xlizellx, Muertos is just as yummy, but it's a totally different taco than KTC. I think there's room for both. So, instead of Maya and Muertos, we'll probably split between Muertos and KTC.

Had 2 tacos on day 1 --- thought "meh" ---but my bad for assuming that they were hard shell crispy tacos and would take 15 minutes.
By the time I got back they were soft and lukewarm at best --- these guys get the food out fast--Went back yesterday for the Burrito test. Very Good and I have a basis of comparison ---I had a Kimchi burrito from a different truck in NYC a few days ago -- this truck had a video of korean pop girls singing and dancing. I did like the food from the truck in nyc just a tad more

At Kimchi Grill I did ask for my Burrito Medium Spice.. pretty sure I got Hot. But I will be back to Kimchi Grill ... its in my nabe and the food is very good. Now I noticed I received 'exact' change yesterday of $9.50 and thought it was a little odd.
Review of the receipt shows ROUNDING charge. Rounding Up quite a lot in my opinion.Burrito 9.42
Rounding .24
Sub T 9.66
Tax 1 .84
TOTAL 10.50The charge should have been (I think)
Burrito 9.42
Tax 1 .836025 (Sales Tax Rate .08875)
Sub T 10.256025 (Actual Real Cost)
Sub T2 10.26
Rounding (.01)
Total 10.25INSTEAD OF ROUNDING DOWN A PENNY THEY ROUNDED UP .24
:scratch:I suppose one could ask for "no rounding" in the future.
 -
I went last night for a kimchi bowl. The Kimchi was hot, which I liked, but could be too hot for some folks. It was good, but my friend and I both took note of the Rounding charge of .24 cents... which we both tried to figure out why they charged us almost a Quarter to bring our bills up to $10 even.I did notice the menu had odd prices listed, thought at first they were trying to make even numbers with tax charged. We both said if it were just a few cents then ok, but almost a quarter??

Pennies-Be-Gone: The Ethics of Rounding

Dear Taco Store,
Just set your prices so that they come out to even amounts with the tax. That way you don't piss off your customers with this rounding business.
9.41 + (9.42 * .08875) = 10.246025
or
9.64 + (9.64 * .08875) = 10.49555Done.

LOL!
Hey Next time i'm gona pay with a fiver, 2 two dollar bills, SBA, and a fifty cent piece.
:geek:
They can take my money or i'll get tacos across the street.

There was that conceptual art project at the Brooklyn Museum Called the Clean Penny Service
http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/community/blogosphere/2011/06/14/a-penny-saved-is-a-penny-earned/I can think of an equally entertaining project.
Bring a thousand or so pennies in front of Kimchi Taco place and ask people to check there receipt when they leave the store. To those who have been 'taken' by the penny rounding scheme, offer them some abes to make up for the injustice. Be sure to post video on youtube (and Brooklynian)

The food here is amazing. The short rib meat is always perfectly seasoned and cooked, the guac is great and most importantly the kimchi is spot on. The prices are low for the serving sizes. The staff is attentive and friendly. Anyone that has an issue with rounding should speak to the owner. I didn't notice the rounding, but the guys really open and he's enjoyable to talk to.
-
you can always count on someone adding their 2 cents on Yelp
"*Updated 5/16/12* - Got a message from the owner noting they weren't aware their POS was doing the rounding and have already fixed the issue. I'm upgrading my rating and will be back to try a taco."
