Mugging on Aug 23
I hope there is less of this as the weather cools down.
Patch wrote: A 34-year-old man was beaten and robbed in a late-night mugging on Eastern Parkway between Underhill and Washington. The man was coming home on August 23 at about 11:30 p.m. when three men jumped him as he stood in front of his apartment building, according to a police report.
One of the attackers punched the man in the face, knocking him to the ground. Then all three muggers kicked and punched him as he was lying on the ground.
Then one of the men said “Give me all you’ve got,” and demanded the man’s wedding ring, asking what it was made of. They also took the man’s iPhone and then ran off.
A neighbor said the man received multiple injuries including a broken cheekbone.
This is at least the eighth violent attack this summer:
- On August 6, a 23-year-old woman was pulled to the ground and repeatedly punched in face on Grand Avenue near Pacific Street, before a resident called the cops;
- On August 4, a man was beaten and robbed by two attackers on Washington Avenue near Lincoln Place.
- On July 30, three muggers punched and kicked a 26-year-old man in the head during a robbery on St. Marks Avenue between Carlton and Flatbush.
- On July 14, a 23-year-old man was taken to Methodist Hospital after a man attacked him on Bergen Street between Washington and Underhill.
- On June 29, a group of men used a golf club to attack and rob a 23-year-old as he was riding his bike on Dean Street at Grand Avenue.
- On June 13, a gunman pistol whipped a man during a mugging of a couple Eastern Parkway between Vanderbilt and Underhill.
- On June 4, a 24-year-old man went to the hospital after someone attacked him with a padlock at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Bergen Street.

This is a crazy list! In addition to violent personal attacks, there have also been a bunch of apartment burglaries and store holdups in the hood this summer. I don't remember it being like this last summer or even the couple of summers before.. am I just forgetting?
I wonder if parade weekend will be even more off the chain this year than usual..
-
This list doesn't strike me as being longer, or more violent than crime in the area in summers since 2004.
This list seems shorter.
....but I may be wearing rose colored glasses.
-
I don't know if it's any worse, but it seems horrible when it's collected all together in one list. When was that incident where the woman had the Macbook stolen from her while she was using it at Blue Marble? Last year?
-
it looks that was in May 2011

Maybe it's time for someone to pull a Charles Bronson. Just saying.

This video and news story makes me believe Florida is ok with Charles Bronson:

New York takes a difference stance.

It seems as if the police were able to catch a suspect, and even have a few cooperative victims:

Wonderful news! This will be one less savage on our streets, though his status as a juvenile will probably mean a light sentence and a quick return to the neighborhood to repeat his sadistic behavior. If we're lucky, the prison guards will beat him within an inch of his life, just as he did his victims.

yet another attempted mugging on Eastern Parkway the other night. think it's incumbent upon us to start writing Tish James and letting her know this is unacceptable. I've written a couple emails today already. Anyone else interested, here's her address: [email protected]

Instead of letter writing to politicians, you might consider a letter to landlord/supers/homeowners on EP asking that they do two simple things. First, install lights outside of buildings to light entryways. Second, trim hedges, trees and greenery in front yards to behind property lines. Those two simple and relatively inexpensive fixes will go a long way to making the area less attractive to muggers.
-
While it wouldn't address the roots of the problem (poverty, parenting, education, opportunity, etc), I would also encourage folks to reduce their risks by being cautious at night and keeping valuables out of sight.
-
Makes it less attractive in general, i'd think. Should note there will be extensive light thanks to the EPW renovations, not sure when it will be implemented, though. Anyway, I prefer holding pubic officials accountable. Squeaky wheels gets the grease, at the end of the day. Tish called for increased policing of affected zones yesterday, for what it's worth And her chief staff wrote a long reply back to my emails indicating, among other things, crime is actually down in 77th. Again, grain of salt. Best thing is to keep clamoring for more attention because eventually you get it, if you're a big enough pain in the ass.
-
Trimming hedges and trees that hang low over the street and lighting entryways makes EP less attractive? Seriously?
Clearly you've never walked on the service roads from Underhill to Franklin. There are section of those streets where its almost pitch black and the setbacks and deep yards provide ample places for folks to hide behind shrubbery and quickly come up behind a passing pedestrian. Asking the people who own or maintain those properties to do a little preventive maintenance should be a first rather than last step.

i live on them.
