Fish on Park/Vanderbilt inside for winter
Hey, everyone, i'm new to the forums but i've been in the neighborhood for 15 years; this is the fish gardener at Park and Vanderbilt. I get lots of questions in person about what happens when the ponds freeze so i wanted to try to post on the boards this year about the fish! So, due to the cooling weather, they are in their winter abode (the laundry room in the basement of the building)safe and sound. So, if any kids (or adults) are asking, you can let them know! ![]()

While This is good know, I am now wondering about all those carp the have in shallow ponds at the Bklyn Botanical Garden.
Do they just have a fish fry every fall?
-
Aw!!! No,
I used to work there and I would have heard
There is actually a beloved old carp (can't remember his name) but he's cared for well, as is everything at the BBG

Thanks Heidi!
My son's first "word" was making a puckery fish face while walking down Park Place, in anticipation of turning the corner in front of your building.
Thanks for a neighborhood institution!
Steve
P.S. He's 6 now.

even in the shallow pools?
I'm thinking of the concrete rectangular ponds that are only about 2' deep, in front of the big building.
...I do not worry about the fish that live in the Japanese garden pond. ...or their turtle friends.
-
Pretty sure I've also seen fish in the frozen "lily pond" pools that you speak of. The even smaller fountains, they seem to be removed from (and some of them they drain).
-
Yes, I figure they temporarily re-locate them to the Japanese garden pond for the winter.
BTW, does anyone know if koi taste good?

P.S. Sample photo. Not the actual fish in question...

Hello Heidi! I love your gardens on Vanderbilt, the fish make it even more special. Thank you for your work beautifying (is this a word?) Vanderbilt!
