What happens inside 660 Washington Ave (at Bergen)? — Brooklynian

What happens inside 660 Washington Ave (at Bergen)?

Anyone know what the deal is with 660 Washington Avenue's storefront? I'm pretty perceptive yet I've puzzled over this in the two years I've lived nearby:

One or two mornings and evenings a week, the corner roll-up gate (only) rolls up and folks congregate inside and outside. Often there's some vans idling curbside.

Day labor agency? Too shabby for methadone clinic; I'd consider AA meetings but I swear one night we walked by and saw a liquor bottle on the desk inside.

This is the place on the corner next to D's Desserts.

Thanks!

  • Night labor? This links to an office cleaning business at that address.

The business cleans supermarkets, offices, etc during the overnight and then drop off and pay the laborers?

  • I was literally just asking myself this same question as I drove by earlier tonight. My thoughts were AA meeting? Men's social group? Something religious?

  • New answer to the headline question: 660 Washington (at Bergen) has been leased and will soon be a café of some sort. Spoke to a nice 20-something guy named Brad who was surveying his new domain this morning.

The place needs a ton of work inside, but he aims to be open "ASAP".

As I've said before, we'll take any worthwhile storefront development down at our end of Washington Ave. There's tons of vacancies and a decent amount of new residential along the route to the C train.

    Welcome to the 'hood Brad!

  • On Friday (11/2) the space was opened up and looked like work is proceeding nicely. I wonder if they'll eventually remove (or move) those obnoxiously large security gates?

Ack! Why do jpgs appear upside down in posts when uploaded to Brooklynian?

  • It is a giant mystery!

Horray for "cafe of some sort"!

  • i seen folks go in and out of there for past years lol, they look like they were renovated back then.

The shop will serve as a cafe during the day with coffee (but no espresso machine), pastries, sandwiches and, happily, WiFi, and at night, become a bar with a comfort food/shared plate menu.

“It will be a casual, neighborhood place where people can go to grab a beer or a sandwich,” said Bradford Nicoll, who is opening the shop with Sara Williams, co-owner of Fresh Salt, a cafe/bar at the South Street Seaport.

The eatery, which doesn't yet have a name, but goes by 660wash on Instagram, takes over the space held by D's Just Desserts, which moved around the corner.

Both Nicoll and Williams live in the area—Nicoll at Lincoln and Classon for the past seven years and Williams for the past two in Fort Greene. For Williams' second venture, Washington Avenue seemed the natural spot.

“We just liked this area and having been here for so long, we see the potential for more and more people coming in,” Nicoll said.

Nicoll and Williams have applied for a full liquor license for the restaurant. (They have secured Community Board support and are waiting to hear from the State Liquor Authority.) Their hours will be 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 3 a.m. on weekends.

The pair hopes to open the cafe mid-January.

  • As of Thursday: transom windows are uncovered. Per one of the owners: hoping for mid-Feb opening. SLA looks promising, and 660 Wash is just a placeholder...real name is in the works...

  • I'm interested in seeing how this cafe does.

The main difference between it, and nearby cafe Skazzy, is that it will serve alcohol.

Skazzy seem to struggle to attract a customer base, while The Spot (which has an alc LIC) seems to do a good business.

Of course, merely having alcohol is not going to cut it....

  • A bit of good news on this otherwise dreary, sleety, non-elephant walky Monday: the bar/café otherwise known as 660 Wash has opened!

A cozy, inviting, unassuming corner bar with miles of glass, on a block that badly needs some coziness. The place is apparently called the Saint Catherine (hallelujah - an unembarassingly named bar/restaurant on Washington Ave!). This place could easily be one's "regular" - the kind of spot that's all too common on Vanderbilt and beginning to creep in on Franklin.

Welcome to the neighborhood Saint Catherine. Looking forward to getting to know ya.

  • [-( no news is more important then the (non)elephant walk.

  • Nice! Another vacant corner finally bites the dust.

  • Anyone know if a menu's posted somewhere? (Just looked at their Facebook page- nada.)

  • I haven't seen a menu yet.

...but it is clear that they put a lot of money into renovating this place, and I am optimistic that they have some expertise at running it as a result of the owner having other locations
