Average ConEd kWh usage — Brooklynian

Average ConEd kWh usage

Hey all,

We have been suffering from unusually high coned bills for a long time and I'm finally ready to figure out why. I was wondering if folks would be willing to share their usage with me for comparable dwellings (since we can get our power funneled to us in different ways through ConEd I figure usage is a better metric than price ...). Ours for the last bill, WITHOUT AC units, was a whopping 890 kWh. Average daily usage, not counting August, which is an AC outlier, is around 20 kWh. Other people in our building are FAR lower.

So -- 2 bedroom, 1350 sq feet, brownstone apt, washer/dryer (not sure if energy star), energy star dishwasher, energy star fridge, 1 40" flat screen, cable modem, airport, DirectTV DVR box, stereo, DVD, two laptops, 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, (no desktop computer), 1 printer. The rest is the usual lights and such. Hot water and heat provided by building. Three AC window units June-September.

Thanks!

  • Are you being billed for real or estimated readings? ConEd billed me for unreasonably high estimated readings, despite having real readings taken, for a couple months, until I called and complained.

  • This seems really high - for our two bedroom this month we used 314kWh - even with at least one person working from home every day of the week (so, lights and electronics on all day). I'd definitely investigate.

Interestingly, DVRs use more electricity than almost anything else in a home these days, including the fridge: http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20071139-260/study-dvr-set-top-box-use-most-energy-at-home/

  • We have a 1086 sf condo, two beds, two bath. 3 PTAC units, electric dryer & washing machine, dishwasher, fridge, 3 TVs, 3 cable boxes, multiple computers, printers, modem, airport extreme, mini airport, multiple this that and the other. The fridge and dishwasher are contractor grade heaps of crap, ditto the PTACs. From 9/21/12 to 10/22/12 we used 955 kWh. I can't remember if we had the a/c running at that time, I doubt it. We use the Direct Payment Plan from ConEd so we pay $276 per month. I think the price of electricity in NY is outrageous, but there is not much I can do - Natural Gas interests have the place sewn up.
