Fort Greene/Clinton Hill Safety - Recent Shootings?
Does anyone feel less safe in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill thanks to the two recent shootings on Fulton and Vanderbilt? I have lived in the area for five years, almost three on Fulton near where the two shootings took place, but am concerned about staying in the area because of the recent crime. I know that the 24 hour diner, bar and bodega do not help and late-night drunken fights are per usual in the area (thus I try to stay inside). But the shooting on December 17th happened to a man who simply walked off the c train and the shooting last early morning happened (although I'm not believing the reporting fuly) to a man protecting his girlfriend in the diner. These are things that can "happen to anyone."
FYI, I am a single white female who has grown to just accept th cat-calling, verbal harassment and threat of muggings. However gun shots are another thing entirely. Is anyone else thinking of moving?
Also, I used to feel safer about the fact that I was so close to the c train at Clinton Washington, so that I did not have to walk in the dark residential streets alone at night if I am coming home at 11 or 12 at night (doesn't happen too often) but now of course the problem seems to be the Fulton street between Clinton and Vanderbilt, only!

there have always been shootings here - this is not new. so...i guess i'm saying nothing has changed, why the new concern?

While any murder is disturbing, the neighborhood has definitely grown safer over the years. Like you, I used to live near a location that attracted fights, noise, bums, thugs, etc. All-night delis tend to attract the bottom feeders and, since this will only change if the deli goes out of business (unlikely), the best bet is to consider moving, if possible. I did so and my quality of life has improved.

thank you so much for your responses! while I understand that I am not in the safest area, I love the area during the day and I like my apartment. However at night, especially on thurdsdays and fridays, its another story. Since i live right next to the c train at clinton washington I felt safer knowing that i would not have a long walk home at night but now it looks like my particular street is having the problems. I have lived here for three years and there have never been any shootings. Then, in the last three weeks there have been two. Yes it's the all night deli, and the club, and the all night diner, and the men who congregrate on the streets. But before I felt okay dealing with it.... no that guns are most obviously involved and present, I'm not so comfortable.
Does anyone know how Propsect Heights is? I wouldn't want to move into another area with the same problems. What about on St Johns Place between Underhill Ave and Washington? Is that too close to Crown Heights?
I have heard that it is an older population - as opposed to the 20-40 year old men drinking on the streets that i am used to.
thanks so much for your help!

Yellowcat, I would suggest walking around various neighborhoods at various times of the day, and talking to lots of bored people in Laundromats in order to determine whether you wish to move and where.

This happened deeper into bed-stuy, but still seems part of a trend of shootings/muggings in central Brooklyn
