Councilman Jumaane Williams
Protests against the police seem to attract the Anarchist-Revolutionary types; those who think late night battles with the police make sense. They are often young, violent and inarticulate. In my view, this makes them more destructive to whatever their cause is, than constructive.
Meanwhile, as a result of the credibility he has earned in the community, Councilman Jumaane Williams is emerging as a level headed, "activist", who is angry and controversial but constructive in his approach.
This summer should be interesting. Sadly, I predict ongoing violent clashes between area youth and the police. Interestingly, it seems as if Mr. Williams is going to try to walk the very fine line between distancing himself from the violent, misinformed, episodic rage of the youth, WHILE maintaining their respect and articulating their legitimate concerns.
I wish him luck. I don't want the public to give the NYPD permission to use more force than I believe necessary, and feel Mr. Williams -in this instance- has so far stepped forward in a level headed way.

For comparison purposes only, here is the rhetoric of those who have revolution as their agenda, but not the long term interests of the youth or the "community":

At a rally Thursday evening, Councilman Jumanne Williams was criticized for posting via Twitter critical comments about some of the people involved in demonstrations that became unruly at rallies earlier in the week.
The division among the crowd grew very tense along Church Avenue, where Williams at one point urged the march to go to a church to discuss the issue rather than to the precinct, out of apparent concern about another violent confrontation with the police. Some went in; many marchers broke ranks.

Meanwhile, 50z (the gang that Kiki "allegedly" belonged to) is calling for the death of the police officers involved.
