Starbucks to open in old Five Guys space

Oh god! I knew this was coming but this is still horrible news! I suspect this might push some of the local shops over the edge. :lame:

Not for nothing, but that was a horrible location for a fast food restaurant. Places like Five Guys need a big lunch crowd as they aren't going to do a big dinner rush in a residential neighborhood with so many other options. There isn't a captive audience of a large commercial building where they could get the type of lunch crowd needed and the had to rely on the afterschool Berkeley Carroll/282/St Francis crowd which also has a bunch of options on 7th Avenue.
A Starbucks will likely do better, especially as it is around the corner from the train station and will likely get people stopping in on their way to work.

one more reason to get coffee at joyce.
-
I go to El Gran Castillo De Jagua for my cafe con leche. The best coffee in the Slope & Prospect Heights, IMO.
-
I'm sure this is going to put me at odds with a lot of people, but I'm happy that a Starbucks is opening there. I spend a lot of time in coffeeshops and if I want to go to one after 9pm I have to hike it to the Starbucks in Park Slope. During the day, I will always opt for a locally run cafe, but if I need a place at night, I'm happy to have a new option.
-
I wonder what time it will open in the morning. Most of the coffee places on my way to the train don't open until 7:30 or 8, which is too late for me (unfortunately!).
-
not sure if either of these are convenient to you, but gran castillo and olde brooklyn bagel are both open pretty early. i think brooklyn bagel opens earlier, like 6 or 6:30.
-
Mr. Lithe, I often find myself in the same situation. Trying to find a coffee shop that's open past 9pm is tricky.
Here are some I've had luck with, if you want to go local & avoid Starbucks: Zelda's on Franklin, Lincoln Station off of Washington, and Hungry Ghost on Flatbush. Good luck on your search for late night caffeine!

Thank god it's Starbucks!

Last night as I was passing by, I peeked into this place and was impressed by the layout. And, despite all of the "fight the power" comments that Starbucks tends to cause amongst the yuppie/hipster/quasi-revolutionary crowd, the place was packed, so I think it'll do quite well.

i walked in a couple days ago to check it out, it's pretty swank. i dont drink coffee but if i had to pass the time and wait for the bus or something, i wouldnt mind doing it in this starbucks. clean, nice furniture, cool decor. got some cool deckstools (broken skateboards repurposed to be stools) http://www.deckstool.com/
maybe im too easy to please.
-
i confess. despite my snide comment i've found it quite convenient. some days i have to go to work very early and have stopped by between 6:30 and 7 and it has been open, the coffee fresh, the staff friendly and competent, the vibe mellow. i still stop at joyce at other times and judging by the lines there, it doesn't seem to have hurt them.

As long as Joyce has that super nice woman behind the counter, I think it will always pull in business. She's the reason it's my morning go-to cup.
-
Joyce is still my favorite place to get coffee. The woman you mention is great, probably the friendliest person working in the neighborhood.
-
Audrina! She's the greatest, and has a killer memory for faces. I knew I had really moved away from Vanderbilt when she no longer asked me "Do you want your latte?" when I walked in.
Howdy, Stranger!
