Camp friendship is no friend
I would rather live directly over a rowdy bar than live on the same block as Camp Friendship.
Camp Friendship Youth Programs
339 8th Street (at Sixth Avenue)
Brooklyn, NY 11215
(718) 965-3695
Almost every weekend night they rent out their gym for private events that usually involve DJed music that's WAY too loud (right now they're rocking out Bell Biv DeVoe's "Poison") and a crowd of drunk people hanging out on the sidewalk smoking and yelling.
Of course, polite complaints have yielded no results. Anyone here live nearby with the same isssue and had any contact with them?

And now some guy is out front on the sidewalk singing to the music through a bull horn. Terrific.
-
Why don't you move? I am sure the landlord will let you out of the lease early without penalty if you were to tell him/her that the noise is unbearable.
-
I'd start calling 311 every single weekend night with noise complaints. Try to get your neighbors to call as well. Call 911 about the mega horn. And are they something anything other than tobacco? If so call the cops on that. Also are they selling or giving out booze? Are their permits in order?
-
Calling 311 will do very little. 311 gets a ton of noise complaint calls from the Barclays center...they are way over their heads with noise complaints in the city.
If drugs are evident, by all means....call the cops -
While 311 is overwhelmed at times the more documentation you can give them the more likely they are to do something. Sidewalker have you contacted your community board? Maybe they can help too.
-
The threat of calling 311 and involving things like the Community Board is often more effective than actually involving them.
I'd meet with the Camp Friendship people, and ask them to chill out. I might say that I really don't want to involve 311 or the CB because they are all powerful and use their authority recklessly, with the hope that they comply.
They don't have to know I view 311 and the CB as largely impotent.

Another Friday night, another loud bunch of drunk f**kers out front and some asshat honking his horn every 2 minutes for the past 20 minutes.
-
I would video tape it (as well as document it) then get Help Me Howard on your side. :alien:

That place has been renting that space and looking after Park Slope youth for over 25 years. I doubt you will have much success getting them to stop. You didn't know they were there when you moved in?
-
8th Street and 6th Avenue is a residential are. It does not matter if they have been renting out the space for 100 years. You have a right to not be subjected to illegal noise or the illegal sale of alcohol. Call 311, 911, your community board, your council-member and the owners of the space. Get your neighbors to join you. People who think you should move have never been subjected to the issues you are dealing with. If they had - they would not make such an idiotic suggestion. Good luck.
-
I'm not sure what renting out the place for adult events with exceptionally loud music and alcohol has to do with "looking after Park Slope youth".
-
Sidewalker have you called, 911, 311 and your CB multiple times yet? You might also want to get in touch with the SLA I can't imagine they'd look to favorably on illegal booze sales. Also video taping it and sending it to Help Howard as Mamacita suggests is a great idea.

This is no help to the original writer but I am curious. Is this the old P.A.L building on 8th Street? There was a P.A.L. building on 8th treet between 6th & 5th when I was a kid in the 40's. It would be ironic if it is because it would mean that a building sponsered by the NYPD is having the near riot you mention that is going on nightly!!!

Here's the website for Camp Friendship, although it is not clear whether these events are run by them, or by some entity that is leasing their space: http://campfriendshipbrooklyn.com/
Here's the building that is being discussed:

Built in 1884 as the Sixth Avenue Methodist Church, Camp Friendship is now the site of a non-profit youth outreach organization
The garden, which is behind Camp Friendship, was built by church volunteers 1971.

I went to CF as a kid, still remember those good old days, heading there after school at JHS 51, going to sleepaway camp in Maine and going up to Prospect Park to the playgrounds in elementary school. I wonder if John Duda still owns it?

Another great night at Camp Friendship last night. A loud party culminated with 20 people out front fighting. Six cop cars and a dozen police officers showed up. Fun, fun, fun!
Thanks for being a great neighbor Camp Friendship!
