vets in Park Slope?

Looking for a good vet in the area - anyone have opinions re: 6th Ave Animal Clinic or 5th Ave Cat Clinic? I know lots of folks go to Prospect Park Animal Hospital but I wasn't a huge fan of the staff the last time I was there with a friend's dog....

  • Dr Julie Morris in Carroll Gardens is great. She's trained in chinese herbs etc along with conventional vet medicine. Animal Healing Arts is her practice, on Henry St (at Carroll St)

6th Ave Animal Clinic is a nightmare. There's an old thread in PH main board about vets, and her awfulness is more fully discussed there.

Animal Kind on Seventh Ave is good, if too crowded and a bit of a mill. The vets are good, but they really pack in the appointments.

The cat place on Fifth looks good . . . my dogs loooove it. But we never go inside
    :D
  • I've heard only good things about the 5th Ave Cat Clinic. DO NOT go to Animal Kind (7th & 11th), bad news! Julie Morris is great but a bit out of your area. Hope Vet on Atlantic is wonderful (@ Bond St.)

Good Luck :D Let me know if I can help in any other way.
  • 5th ave cat clinic is great... friendly staff, and the vet is super nice and professional. Highly recommended
  • there are a bunch of old threads on the PH board for vets in PS b/c there are more in PS. search!
  • I've had good and bad experiences at Animal Kind. It all depends on which vet you get. I used to take my dearly departed old cat there but switched to Prospect Park Animal Clinic after several frustrating incidents. But more recently, I was fostering a stray cat and took him to Animal Kind a few times, where he was seen by Dr. Monica Murphy -- I thought she was very good.

My dogs go to Prospect Park Animal Clinic (on PPW) and I've been very happy with them overall.
  • there is one in kengsington i forgot whats it is located :/. its south of the park.
  • I used to go to 5th Avenue cat clinic and had a pretty postitive experience. Then the father and brother handed the practice over to the youngest brother/son and my friend had such a horrible experience there that I haven't returned. The cat died and the guy was cold and rude and ordered $1500 in tests. It was awful and I helped her through this ordeal and felt terrible that I had recommended this place. I don't know where to go for my cats now but don't want to go in there unless the older Dr. Bregman is back. (He was very nice). I know alot of people like Animal Kind if you choose a certain vet. I always thought they were expensive but maybe i have to just go there?

That's so terrible! I know it's a hike but the best vets around are at Hope Vet on Atlantic @ Bond. They don't nickle and dime you like some of these other places. No unnecessary testing or perscriptions. The only facts I know about Animal Kind are that three different kitties I've sat for have been their for diabetes and had them up on frighteningly high levels of insulin because they weren't doing the testing correctly. Another client came into to see them pulling her cat out of her carrier with a rope around her neck.... I have heard that there are two out of the bunch that are fantastic but it's hard to get an appointment with them. Either way, there's a new emergancy clinic on Warren btw Court and Smith open 24 hrs :)
  • I've had nothing but great experiences with the 5th Ave Cat Clinic -- they saved my cat's life by referring him to Animal Medical and were great about admitting he was far beyond the expertise of a general practice. We still use them whenever he needs 'normal' care and they are great with our other cat.

We had taken him to Animal Kind for months before that and while they were nice, they never had the guts to admit they couldn't identify the problem -- nor would they refer me elsewhere. He became very ill and nearly died, but thanks to the Cat Clinic and Animal Medical, he's just fine.

Their boarding facilities are great too.
  • I'm a huge fan of the staff at Hope Vet. My rabbit sees Dr. Lori Bierbrier - a small animal expert. I was delighted with how she treated and handled my rabbit, and how patient and informative she was with me. The reception staff and vet techs couldn't have been friendlier, and it was an all-around positive experience.
  • animal kind scared the shit out of me a few weeks ago. I'm having one of my cats spayed there tomorrow and I'm not sure I'll end up going back to them for either one of my cats.
  • Subject: 5th Avenue Cat Clinic

Please, please, please DON'T go to 5th Avenue.

I took my cat there last summer. She was peeing outside of the box. Both of the Bregman sons were on vacation and I saw a female vet (name escapes me at the moment). She took a lot of tests (urine, in-depth blood analysis) and told me my cat was fine. Two weeks later (after she didn't seem to be eating much), I brought her back and they still told me she was FINE - this even though she lost two pounds in two weeks! A few days later, my cat puked up foam. I went to another vet and had 5th Ave. fax over the bloodwork.

New vet said that clearly my cat had a pancreatic infection (which was obvious AND showed up as CLEARLY MARKED ABNORMAL on the bloodwork). Put her on antibiotics. Next day she was worse. New vet changed antibiotics. Third day, injected antibiotics. That night, as she got worse and worse, I took her to the emergency vet at 3am. She died in the morning.

$2000 later, I got back her ashes.

Emergency vet said while she didn't want to second guess another vet, the fact that she lost so much weight so quickly and what the bloodwork showed, a prudent call would have been to put her on antibiotics.

I left 3 messages for the Bregmans to call when the returned. They didn't. I called every day until one of them got on the phone with me. He proceeded to get nasty at me when I told him that I thought it was clear their other vet overlooked some obvious signs. Asked me "Did YOU go to vet school for 4 years?!" I told him clearly they could use 4 more years. He hung up on me.

Yes, this post is long-winded, but if I stop EVEN ONE PERSON from this type of "care" and treatment by their establishment, I will consider it a tribute to my (now dead) cat.

Have been to Prospect Park Animal Clinic and Windsor Terrace Vet since with no complaints about either.

This sounds incredibly similar to my friend's experience there. Especially the rude and callous treatment after the death of a pet. I do believe it is the youngest son because I thought the older brother was pretty nice when I used to go there. And I do belive it is pretty hard to diagnose cats because they mask many symptoms until they are very sick. Even so, I am not going back there!!
  • Subject: Re: 5th Ave. Cat Clinic

KensingtonMom - you are right, it is often very hard to diagnose cats. I just found my paperwork and the vet's name is Loraine Fulco. I checked her license and found out she'd only had it for a year or two. I seriously think that with the condition my cat was in (peeing, vomitting foam, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, irregular blood tests), she should NOT have continued to tell me that everything was okay. At least tell me to go get a second opinion.

The way that Bregman spoke to me was unreal. I got the distinct feeling he's had similar conversations before. After the way he talked to me, I totally lost my mind and called back and told his receptionist that I will continue to believe that they killed my cat and that I'd tell everybody I could not to go to them.

Oh, and when I asked for her records after all of this, they tried to charge me another $6.

Words can't even describe how horrible the whole thing was.
  • Have had very good luck with Prospect Park Animal Clinic, cats and dogs.
  • okay, ditched Animal Kind this AM. they were jerks. will avoid 5th ave. now where should I go??

i take my dog to prospect park animal clinic just off the park.

dr. silverman is very experienced and runs a tight ship.

try and avoid sundays if possible, that's when the newbie vets work.

and helpful if your dog gets injured while playing in the park -- he's on 6th street, just off the park.

If you want to make the trek, take them to Hope Vet. They're on Atlantic at Bond. Worth the trip.

My brother in law works at Brooklyn Veterinary Hospital on Vanderbilt and I love the doctors that work with him (especially Dr. Farmer and the woman doctor who at the moment I cannot remember her name). The staff is wonderful and really does treat everyone's pet wonderfully.

Did you keep one of the rescued kittens? If so which one?

All of the cats did find homes and, even better, they're all in pairs!

  • Dr. Silverman at Prospect Park Animal Clinic. I have taken my cats and my friends cats & dog there for many years. He is fantastic.
  • Subject: Animal Kind

I've heard bad and good stories about Animal Kind but they've actually done well by my cats. Also, if you have any "exotic" animals, they have more than one vet who can treat them, which cannot be said for other local vets. I have two turtles I've taken in and the vets and techs really know their stuff. Dr. Marcela Salas, in particular, is knowledgable, kind and charming. (And no, I'm not on their staff!)

Ha! Your kitten and my kitten look related. She's just about 6 months old now (and 5lbs.) and can eats like a horse!
