steamed mussels and fries? — Brooklynian

steamed mussels and fries?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
Who has really good steamed mussels and fries in the slope? I thought of Belleville, but have never really been that crazy about that place for some reason. The mussel appetizers at Al Di La are great but they are closed on Tuesdays.
Any ideas?
Thank you

  • bar minnow does them but the portion of mussels is kinda skimpy for my taste. I do like the sauce/broth they cook them in and the fries are good.
  • Both Cocotte and Moutarde have excellent Moules Frites and generous portions.
  • Subject: 12th St. Bar & Grill

The mussells in a curry cream base is amazing!!!
  • Cocotte was closed--and seem to be closed M-Wed?? but I remember their good fries. So reluctantly my friends and I ended up at Belleville--the place I have never really liked. What is it about that place? The mussles were bland and the fries were just a step above MacDonalds. I was totally not impressed and it just killed my craving.
  • I you're willing to travel, BarTabac has *amazing* mussels in fries with a few different preperations. Yummy :)
  • the mussels at beast (in p. heights) are awesome. if they do a cross-street pairing with soda for fries, perfection may be born in PH. I think I'll go pray to the food gods for this.
  • 12th St. Bar and Grill has never failed me for either. You may need to create the pairing yourself, though.
  • The Circle Bar (I think that's the name) at the south end of the Park has decent sized portions. I always stop off there when I'm in the area.
  • Bogota Bistro on Fifth Avenue serves perfectly soft mussels in tomato sauce.

Lemongrass Grill on 7th Aveune serves chewy mussels in spciy black sauce. After chewing one of Lemongrass Grill's rubber mussels, you'll avoid bivalve mollusks for life.
  • A little further afield, Cafe on Clinton has amazing mussels with a Vietnamese-style broth infused with lemongrass, but like many of the options above, I don't think they have "moules frites". You'll have to order the mussels and fries separately.
  • Hello, 2006.
    Now serving 2007,
Sheep Station has a pretty delish moules frites. And their fries have gotten much better in the last few months.
Never been to Cafe on Clinton...Viet-yum!
  • Isn't Bar Minnow closed for good now?
  • I will also put my vote in for Moutarde. especially the one with cream. Good fries and not too expensive.
  • Belleville is a choice for me if I want winter dishes.. meat.. stews and such.. The burgers has been good but I have never cared much for any preparation they do from the sea. Sorry you were disappointed in the mussels/fries thing..but not suprised.
  • I vote Sheep Station also. I really like the food there.
  • Umm, HELLO? Everyone outside the slope knows that le gamin on vanderbilt has great mussels.

Everyone also knows that moules frites don't taste so bon after you've been bonked on the head by evil roaming tweens.

At least on this side of the tracks we only have to contend with underemployed attorneys, like Dan Mitchell. Yum.
  • Well, germfree!, I find that most any piece of information prefaced by

    can be pretty much disregarded.
  • Sheep Station!

    I thought that was kinda funny . . .
    :D
  • Babouche, the newish North African place on 5th Ave (it doesn't have a sign yet, but it's still pretty busy) has excellent mussels. decent portion. can't remember if there was a frites option.
  • Brooklyn Fish Camp *had* good mussels... but only on their winter menu. WTF? Since when are mussels are a winter dish???
  • Another vote for !2th St B&G. I'm not a big fan of mussels, but several friends have gone with me and raved about them (and apparently the dish is bargain priced)
  • damn. the secret of the 12th street bar and grill mussels dish is out!
    double damn!!
  • They don't come with frites, but Al Di La's mussels are the best around hands down, end of story.
