the Wong Movers (Vivian Wong is the person you'll deal with) are fantastic. they've moved me twice and NEVER deviated from their quote (I tip $25/person assisting with the move - they bring 2-3 people). they never complain, no matter how absurd your move is, and nothing has ever been damaged! I'm not kidding, and I DO NOT work for them or have any interest in their business beyond knowing that I'll use them and reco them forever. their number is 718-888-7707.

a pricing "for instance" - they moved me with a queen sized bed, around 30 boxes (many of books), a large dresser, several small pieces of furniture, a television set and a computer (including gigantic monitor) - from a first floor harlem apartment to a 4th floor walkup in PH for a mere $220. they did the entire move in one friday afternoon - maybe 4 hours max.
  • I just moved a month and a half ago, and I did a lot of research on movers. Here are my notes:

    The Good Move

    John
This is who I went with on three different friends' recommendations. They don't have insurance, but they're cheap. Nice guys but they only sent two guys and it took several hours; probably not best for a big move unless you get them to agree to send more guys (which probably costs more). Very good with my stuff, though, super-nice, and they gave me a lift to the new place.
    $70 per hour

    Rabbit Movers
    www.rabbitmovers.com
3 men with truck are $90 per hour
4 men with truck are $105 per hour
    2 hour minimum
Plastic bags for bed or sofa, $6 each
Can get insurance up to $300
    Sean
    718-852-2352
I know several coworkers who have moved with these folks and LOOOOOVE them; the only reason I didn't go with them was because they weren't available at the time I had to move. Very nice, totally cute website.

    Ideal Moving & Storage
    www.idealmoving.com
    (212) 777-5507
    Jacob
    $192 hour insured
    1 hour travel time
    gratuity customary 20%
This place is gay-owned and has big pink trucks: awesome. Really nice, highly recommended, and insured, but expensive.

    Divine Moving
    www.divinemoving.com
4 men at $105 per hour
3 hour minimum plus 1 hour travel time
Credit cards accepted up to $400

    +½ hour travel time required=$75
    Can pay by personal check
Says to check into whether building requires a certificate of insurance -- $25 processing fee

Ooh! I think I used them for my last move a couple of years ago. I was very happy with them, they were FAST, and the only reason I didn't call them this time was because I couldn't find their number again. So add them to my list too. :)

Brownstone Brothers were great. They're expensive, but you get what you pay for, and because of a binding estimate, you know exactly what it's going to cost up front. They come and size up your move ahead of time and give you an exact price.
If you can afford it, I'd go with them.
  • Subject: Thank you

    Awesome help! Very grateful.
  • So who did you use? share with us what happend how was it?
  • I just moved an absurd amount of very heavy and unwieldy stuff with Wong Movers. They did a comprehensive inventory with me over the phone, then gave me a quote right then. They came early the day of the move, told me to relax and not do anything, and proceeded to quickly move everything. There was no breakage of any sort, they were pleasant and worked really hard. I gave them a $100. tip {3 guys}. VERY happy with Wong, and will use them if I ever move again.

    Sorry, that was me.

oh yay! I love them - they are the most professional moving company I've ever experienced. and the are absurdly fast.
  • Fast they are, yet my move took five whole hours, that's how much crap I own. Wong is GREAT in my book.
  • Are they licensed? I can't move without a licensed and insured mover...
I can't find any record of this company...
  • I have no idea, you should call and ask. I had no breakage of any type, however, I moved my very delicate, non-replaceable textile machinery and things myself a few days before.
  • we're using All Star. We're a family of five (six this summer) which makes it a bigger job, and All Star was the only one who actually sent someone out to give us a guaranteed estimate. The others wanted to do an estimate by phone or have us send an e-mail list of stuff...

I do think All Star works for us because it's a bigger move, and we would probably have gone elsewhere for a single or couple.
  • Hello,
I used these guys for a move from Manhattan to Brooklyn. They were great. They took my bed apart and put it back together. Both were professional and the price remained the same as quoted before the move. Highly recommend ...

  • Big Apple have moved us a few times and have always been great. I think they're on 3rd or Nevins. Also, tipping for movers should be $5 per man per hour, with a few bucks extra depending on difficulty.

They never pick up :( Any advice on a best time to call?
  • I got totally screwed by FlatRate who said 500 flat rate and then it ended up being about A THOUSAND by the time they were done!!

The w hole operation was very shady-- NOT RECOMMENDED.
  • Weirdly the only people from this list to return my call for Ideal Movers and it was way too expensive but they were super nice!

Still can not get in touch w/ Wong Movers...maybe that is an old #?
  • I just left a message for Wong -- Vivian Wong's name was on the machine, so I doubt it's an old number. I also haven't had trouble with Rabbit returning my calls. I used them to move my apt in Sept and they were great, though more expensive than I'd anticipated (it took much longer than anyone imagined).
  • why all the questions?
  • i also had a great experience with Wong. Nice, professional, fast-- and I got to ride in the truck!
  • if you're looking for one more option, i moved in february (and 2 friends moved in july) using movers not shakers - www.moversnotshakers.com - they're flat rate, reliable, get the job done and do it quick. reasonably priced. tell them you had friends recommend them and they tend to cut you a small break in price too. :)
  • I know this realy good mover that actualy lives right here in CH, so you know your supporting fellow locals, and you can just ask other CH residents about him - as a reference, his company is called:
    Y.S. Movers. 718- 467-0171
His name his Yoske, you might have spotted his big blue truck, but in any case he has a great reputation, so you know your in good hands...
  • I used Oz (www.ozmoving.com) when I moved from Gramercy to Crown Heights. The company was recommended to by a colleague who had a good experience for his move to Jersey. They were on time, I was late, lucky I had a friend helping me pack that day. They brought 4 guys to move me out of my studio and I was out in less than 45 min. It poured. They didn't complain about that or about carrying things up or down steps. I don't think they were the cheapest, $600 for the move, plus tip. But I thought they were reliable, fast and didn't lose or break anything.
  • hi.
We moved from NYC to Washington and used Safeway Van Lines movers. very reliable. they have a free estimate form on the website where you can itemize your items and get the full price. the estimate we received was accurate and they didnt charge us more. You can go online and read more about them: http://www.safewayvanlines.com
  • Subject: Flat Rate Sucks

DO NOT USE FLAT RATE. Terrible company. They broke a table in half and managed to scratch and dent numerous other items. Before we paid them they assured us we were covered on the insurance we bought for the move but when we tried to collect on the damages they stiffed us.

Honestly, I was going to take them to small claims court but after buying a new house, renovating and having our first baby we ran out of energy to deal. My only solace in life is to tell as many people not to use those fuckers.

    I hate them.
  • Subject: Shleppers in New York

I moved out of my apartment last week and used Shleppers.
Not only they were very responsive on the phone and addressed all my needs, they also provided excellent packing+unpacking service and managed to finish the job in less than 8 hours!
    I was amazed!

If you ever need a local move in New York City check them out at shleppers.com. They are reliable, trusted and have over 30 years experience - my uncle used their services 20 something years ago and he recommended them to me :)

    otherwise known as movers-wientrans

these guys moved me from kensington in brooklyn, to the bronx, and broke some of my furniture. they denied that they did it, never returned calls, and I was stuck with having to buy new furniture. don't call them.
  • I can second Rabbit Movers. They're very courteous and accommodated a last-minute change in schedule that was out of my control. I've used them twice and they work fast. This time, the crew was a little exhausted due to a ridiculous move they'd done earlier in the day, so they could have been more careful--they broke a few of our flower pots--but generally my experience was great both times.
