BHers' thoughts on Atlantic Yards
Subject: BHers' thoughts on Atlantic Yards
In all the debate about Atlantic Yards, I have to say that I've been tepidly pro. Maybe it's the fact that it won't have a huge impact on my daily life, and I like the idea of te Nets moving to Brooklyn. Reading the piece in NY mag made me reconsider though, which got me wondering about the rest of the neighborhood. What do Brooklyn Heights residents think about the plan?

I live in Fort Greene, about 6 blocks from the proposed A/Y site.....while I agree that something should be done there, I don't think that an arena and luxury hi-rises are the way to go. The traffic in that area now, around the Atlantic Terminal, is a total nightmare and I doubt that a valid impact study has been done. I also have concerns about whether or not the market rate units will be sold/rented successfully, as there are so many similar units being developed (including the Williamsburg Savings Bank) amid doubts about the viability of the NY housing market, especially condos and the like. Also..........who wants to live near a stadium? I've been to Yankee and Shea stadiums and the area around them is no great shakes......

Subject: architecture
when you have money, you can build what you want.
Do you want me to tell you what to buy for lunch? and no mayo, bitch!
didn't think so.
don't like this society, the best thing is that you are free to leave, anytime.
and all the a$$hol3s gangin' up with the "I hate Frank Gehry" bandwagon protesters, do you know how good this architect is? do you know his projects this scale are designed like that of an art museum?
Do you know what we would have if a Run-Of-The-Mill Most-Units-For-The-Money architect were hired instead of this artist? Go take a look at some of the housing projects around brooklyn, the ones run by the NYHSC or whatever they are. Cold, stale, rigid, sun-blocking nightmares.
You'd rather have that, and piss on Frank Gehry? Right?
Effing schmucks, wake up. You can't stop anything in this world unless you buy it.

Call me a pessimist but I think the AY monstrosity is going to be disasterous for the neighborhood. The schools and services are going to be overloaded and the traffic is going to be horrendous.
Lovely, Frank Gehry is the architect of the signature building of the complex. So I should be thankful of that while overlooking all the other problems the development is going to cause?
Let's not even get started on the subject of eminent domain.
All development is not bad but long lasting development is better when it's done on an organic level. You don't cure a cold by giving someone a heart transplant. -
FACT: THERE ARE SPORTS TEAMS AND STADIUMS THAT DRAW TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE.
FACT: THAT'S NOT GOING TO CHANGE, NOR SHOULD IT
FACT: THERE ARE BASICALLY TWO CHOICES FOR WHERE TO PUT ARENAS/TEAMS. ONE IS IN A FIELD SURROUNDED BY NEWLY BUILT PARKING LOTS. THE OTHER IS AT A MAJOR TRANSIT HUB.
FACT: THIS CORNER IS THE TRANSIT CENTER OF THE BOROUGH, A CITY THAT WOULD BE THE FOURTH LARGEST IN THE COUNTRY IF IT WERE SEPARATED OUT. THERE IS NO BETTER PLACE IN THE CITY FOR A HIGH RISE/HIGH TRAFFIC DEVELOPMENT.
ALL THE NIMBY TYPES CAN EAT DEEZ KNUTZ AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED. IF YOU OPPOSE THIS PROJECT YOU'RE IN FAVOR OF SPRAWL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CARELESSNESS. THE OPPOSITE OF SPRAWL IS HIGH DENSITY. THE PLACE FOR HIGH DENSITY IS CENTER CITY AT THE CROSSROADS OF ALL THE MAJOR RAIL LINES AND TWO LARGEST STREETS. DEAL WITH IT. AND WTF DO YOU CARE ABOUT TRAFFIC ANYWAYS? PEOPLE DUMB ENOUGH TO DRIVE THERE CAN SIT ALL DAY, WHO CARES. TAKE THE TRAIN, TREVOR, AND STOP WHINING. -

Anybody interested in learning more about AY should see the doc "Brooklyn Matters" - it very helpfully lays out many of the issues in about an hour.
They've been doing free screenings all over Bklyn, including every Friday night at Spoke The Hub on Union Street in Park Slope.

So, what do BH residents think about AY? Without name-calling trollitude, if you can . . .
