fresh produce — Brooklynian

fresh produce

I'm new to the neighborhood & wondering where is the best place to get fresh produce near Cortelyou & E 17th. The supermarkets on Cortelyou aren't great for this. Thanks for the help.

  • The Co-op on Cortelyou has nice produce, all organic, sometimes a bit pricey, but good. There are also some really nice Russian markets over by Church and East 4th, of you feel like a walk. Not organic, but good produce and also a lot of Eastern European and Middle Eastern imports. Decent small farmer's market in spring and summer in the schoolyard off Cortelyou, I think on Argyle.
  • Yep, the name of the place on Church is called Golden Farm, really only good if you have the time or a car. Otherwise the co-op is good but a cucumber costs like $2. Best to just keep checking the supermarkets, the Met and Associated on Cortelyou and the C-Town on Coney Island.
  • On Saturday mornings from some point in spring thru the end of fall, there's a Greenmarket in the lot behind PS 139 (enter from Argyle Rd.) It's small, but I used to get some good stuff there when I lived in the area.

Also, it's a couple of train stops away, but the produce places on Ave J are pretty good. Closed on Friday evenings and Saturdays though.

As for supermarkets, I always liked Associated better than C-Town. C-Town always seemed to have this rotting meat smell coming from the back so I wouldn't get much more than paper towels or garbage bags there if I were you.

    Good luck!
