Just moved to Kensington.... — Brooklynian

Just moved to Kensington....

Hello all!

After 8 years of living in the South Slope, I've become a victim of gentrification. Yup, the hipsters, developers, suburban trust fund babies, and Manhattan transplants have finally driven the rents beyond my means and so it is, that I find myself in Kensington.

Honestly, I'm not gonna miss the carefully cultivated bed head and $250 pairs of "vintage jeans" that have taken over (and ruined) my old neighborhood, but I suddenly find myself in a new area, devoid of my comfortable routine and the neighbors that I've known for many years.

If anyone can recommend any restaurants, pubs, a decent bagel place, or assrtd. local highlights that might be of interest, I would certainly appreciate it. I have a penchant for dive bars, thai food, unpretentious coffee shops, carnival side shows, and anything dog friendly (my pup would thank you too if only she could type).

My new digs are on East 3rd at Albemarle. Hello new neighbors!

  • Well, seems as though you're near Church Ave so you've got Golden Farm for fruits and veggies and just down the same side of the street from there is a Polish deli. You can get lots of goodies there. They make their own bigos, stuffed cabbage, meat patties, and soups (try the pickle soup, the red borscht, the white borscht and the tomato soup) plus she has real good non-Boar's Head meats.

As for restaurants, well, in that area good luck. The bagel place on church near E 4th is pretty good.

But if you don't mind walking, head down to Cortelyou Rd and you will find Picket Fence and The Farm on Adderly, both real great. There is also some good Pakistani/Indian places on Coney Island Ave for a cheap meal.
  • Thanks for the info...honestly, it's nice to be in a more residential area.

I don't mind walking/catching the bus to go grab a nice dinner or a drink.
  • I lived in the Village in th city for three years before moving to Westminster Rd. It was a bit of a switch for me, just as it probably has been a switch for you coming from PS. Take some time to explore the restaurants, bars and coffee shop on Cortelyou. That's your best bet. You may be surprised with what you find. My favorite is the Farm.
  • A friend of mine just rented a massive two-bedroom (1200 ft or so) on Rugby and Cortelyou for $1950.

Oh, and the Paki/Indian restaurants on CIA are great for a fast meal.
  • Oh geez I think I lived in that apartmnt in 1971.. rent controll was $92 a month!! $1950.. go for it.. what a bargain..
(p.s. I was smart enought to buy the building in 1974.. Of course most of my tenants were welfare recipients for the next 15 years or so but what with section 8 and not giving much heat, hot water or repairing much in the building.. I got by.. What did I care.. I lived in one of the 5 towns for those years.. Boy was I suprised when I realized that the turn was up.. I fixed up the place. Sure it cost some money but geez do you believe 2 bed apts are going for near $2,000. I still have one son (the baby son) who got in to Harvard for the Fall... I am so happy that I can use the rent on just 2 of those apt to pay his tuition.. Thanks!!
  • I guess veets you are doing a stereotypical landlord here?
  • Cat.. I was joking.. Hope ya got it!
  • yes, i thought so!! but you know... you never know!?

    but i hear you!
  • lbk...

I'm sure you've found Thai Tony's by now and AM Thai. for some reason, one thing we do have is thai! (now at least.)

I'm fairly new (one year) also but the Golden Farm - which I always call International Market - does have a really good selection. They continue to surprise me! Whoever buys for that place is really good at running the gamut of the standard to the more obscure organic (but I guess people are asking for it!).

there is a mexican restaurant called el mirador on church just past dahill that is good. some people say ambrosia - italian at church off mcdonald - is good. I have not tried it myself.

the kensington windsor terrace list serve is a good place to 'join.' there is a new CSA(community supported agriculture). and there is a kensington blog that has a lot of good info.

i moved also from park slope and I love taking the B67. love walking to the park from this 'side.' there are a lot of good things and some things to get 'used to.'

    best of luck!

Excellent! I'll certainly check these places out. It's nice to see that new businesses are coming into the area with the summer weather. As the saying goes, "Don't like the restaurants in your neighborhood? Just wait until spring!"

Well over here you might need to wait until spring, winter and the following spring. The commercial rents are way too high for the market and so we are having trouble luring some fun businesses over here. We have the clientele, now we just need affordable commercial rents so that people can take a chance and open here. The places that do open are mobbed.
  • I've been reading Jane Jacobs' book "The Death and Life of American Cities." She addresses exactly this issue of what happens when commercial and residential rents are too high and we are seeing exactly that, on the commercial side especially, in Kensington. I'll try to post some of it if I can.
