edited November -1 in Brooklyn Eats
i just came back from the key food on 5th. to buy a whole chicken
first i pick up a murray's chicken and it says on the label "heart and gizzard has been removed, liver may be missing"

and i'm like WTF?! i want the liver! i want the heart!!

so i buy a bell and evans chicken instead.
get home. start to quarter it and there's no heart or liver inside either!?

since when are hearts and livers removed from chickens?

  • Since they sell them to someone else 'cause they think you don't want it. Sure I don't, but my dog sure does!

That's a funny label tho - they're sure about the heart but not about the liver?
There's a horror movie or urban legend brewing there..
  • yes, and i'll bet since they price chickens by weight i'm sure plenty of consumers complained that they packed the birds with "throwaway parts" just to make some extra money.

Q -- perdue sells containers of chicken livers and they're not that expensive. i buy mine at Key Food on Prospect Ave. i make doggie crack aka baked chicken liver treats with 'em and the pooches in the park follow me like the Pied Piper whenever i'm carrying 'em.
  • Try a fresh meat market.

They kill your chicken and give you every part that is edible , unless you ask that they take it out.

You paid for the whole chicken , if you want the head as well , take the head! :)
  • where is there a fresh meat market in park slope?
one where there are cages of live chickens and i can point to the one that i want
and bam! they slaughter right in front of me eyes...

    donde?
  • In Park Slope:

    United Meat Market
219 Prospect Park W (between 16th St & Windsor Pl)
    (718) 768-7227

I'm not sure if they kill it for you on the spot , but you can call and ask.
  • i know that place
that's where i get my bone marrow bones from
they charge just $2 bucks marrow bone from a cut up cow's leg

growing up in corona queens. i remember having "viveros" in the neighborhood
these would be chicken markets. chickens clucking inside these wire and wood cages. you point to the one you want
they break its neck. boil it
pluck the hair and give it to you wrapped with the unhatched eggs still warm inside

i sent an email to murrayschicken about the lack of liver in their whole chickens
    just waiting... O:)
  • Wow. You got ripped off. Get your money back! Those bird company bastards are probably charging double for those organs now that they're outside of the bird.
