Best bakery in Brooklyn

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll give it a try.

Hey guys, I moved this topic to Brooklyn & Beyond as it's a borough-wide question.
-
Allan's Bakery on Nostrand ave. in the Flatbush section over 40 years in business and I've been a customer almost that long. If you go on Sat. there will be a line out to the street and it remains that way the entire day. My daughter likes Maxwells on Atlantic east of Pennsylvania. Brooklyn is a big place so Shakoor's Sweet 2th on Halsey or Heavenly Crumbs on Franklin may be more convenient.
-
Abu's on Fulton (around Bedford Avenue) makes a mean carrot cake, moist, delicious, and the frosting is flavorful, not just sugar. I've had a few other things from there and they were good too. Service can be ... let's say, casual, and it's not cheap, but if you want a nice carrot cake ... . --E.

Abu's also makes brilliant sweet potato pie . . .
and The Chocolate Room on the north end of Fifth Ave in the Slope makes a great chocolate layer cake. Order 24 hrs in advance - they'll only sell you slices day of (I did that this weekend...soooo goooooood)
Joyce Bakery in Prospect Height is no slouch of course -- don't know what their b'day cake situation is . . . -
Mrs.Maxwell's on Atlantic and Pennsylvania.
-
I'll second the Mrs. Maxwell's recommendation. They do everything, butter cream, whipped cream, ice cream and fruit goo. Its been there for over thirty years and is still going strong.
-
what's the name of that place in red hook that makes the lemon cakes and delivers? unbelievable.
-
i'm surprised to hear you didn't like cake man raven. i've never tasted anything from there, but all i hear are raves about that place.
-
Thank you for all of the recommendations. I bought my husband a birthday cake from Cake Man Raven last year, and it was just so so. I know there has to be something better in Brooklyn!
-
Cake Man Raven' stuff is sugar-induced hype personified. The red velvet is decent if you're a lover of slathered icing and in the mood for a slice of something decadent, but the service is among the worst I've ever seen anywhere in the world. Comically long lines, forgotten orders, rude staff--I have seen it all on virtually every visit, and I eventually decided to stop going there. He seems to have struck marketing gold though, and the perpetual lines outside his store suggest that he's doing something right. I'd back the recommendation for Abu's if you're in the market for red velvet that rivals the Cake Man, in my view, and throw in Choice for incredible carrot and chocolate cakes.

Where are those two bakeries you mentioned located, CitO (luv your avatar, BTW)?
-
While not located in Bklyn - Black Hound Bakery on 2nd and 12th (?) in the city is great!
-
The Chocalate Room is great but Allan's bakery IMHO has the best birthday cakes and other exotic treats, and the stuf is usually still hot it goes so quickly. Brooks Valley also makes a great vegan sweet potato pie and Heavenly Crumbs blows Magnolia out of the water for cup cakes.
-
where is brooks valley? (i couldn't find anything on google...)
-
but Allan's bakery
and who is Allan?
In Red Hook is the fabulous Margaret Palca Bakery on Columbia St.
She's really good, and makes the astonishing chile-chocolate flourless cake served at Alma next door. -
Allan is the name of the founder of the bakery, as I said if you want to be a part of Brooklyn you have to venture out. Allan's Bakery is worth the trip, and please all who go tell us what you think.
My mother always tells me the story of when she would go to Allan's in the mid 60's and she was just starting out and we were babies and the owner's of Allan's would always give her something extra from the goodness of their hearts. They have been well rewarded for their kindness to many, so be prepared to wait on a line that is over 40 years long. Enjoy -
