READ BEFORE YOU POST: Tips for using this forum

If you have a pet that needs a home and want to post about it in our Brooklyn Pets forum, here are a few tips and suggestions to consider first:

1) Please don't just post once and then never return to the site. Brooklynian's moderators and admins will happily add a "sticky" to your posting about a pet that needs a home, which insures that the post will remain at the top of this forum so people see it, but PLEASE post an update in the thread to let us know if the pet has been adopted.

We have many posts about pets needing homes stickied in this forum, and we try to remove the stickies as soon as we hear pets have found homes in order to keep attention focused on the ones who still need them. Occasional updates on how the search is going are also appreciated. If the original poster hasn't updated us in two weeks, the thread will be un-stickied.

2) Also, please check back here every so often to see if anyone has responded, because sometimes people post follow-up questions or suggestions in the threads.

3) Information you should post:
* A photo, if at all possible. You can include images from Flickr, PhotoBucket, or another online photo hosting service in your post. If you don't know how to do that, send a private message to me by clicking the PM button below this post and I will be happy to upload your pet's photo to my own Flickr account so that I can then post the picture in the thread. Pictures REALLY help generate interest.
* The animal's age, sex, and other descriptive details about its personality, health, and background. The more details to let a potential adopter know about the animal, the better your chances of finding a home for the animal are.
* It's best NOT to post your full name, email address, or phone number here. We have no control over who views this site, and it's never a good idea to put direct contact info out there on the Internet. Please take advantage of our PM (private messaging) system; registered users of Brooklynian.com can use this to contact each other off the board without putting their private personal info out there for all to see. Just add a line at the end of your post that says something like "PM me for details." The PM system sends you a notice at the email address you registered with to let you know you have a message waiting for you here, so start checking that address if it's not one you use often.

3) Don't *only* use this forum. While posting here has helped a lot of people find homes for pets, it's hardly the most highly-trafficked place online for this sort of thing. Please also post about your pet to Petfinder.com:
http://www.petfinder.com/
FIDO maintains a page of local lost/found http://www.fidobrooklyn.org/rescue/adoption.html

There are also some photo pools on Flickr you should post to, including:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/fuzzyfriends/
http://www.flickr.com/groups/lookingforahome/

If you must give up a pet before you've found a home for it, please consider a no-kill shelter. The closest one I know of is BARC in Williamsburg:
http://www.barcshelter.org/home/index.html

Another possibility is the Little Shelter in Huntington, on Long Island:
http://www.littleshelter.com/

And Petfinder keeps a searchable database of other shelters and animal rescue groups here:
http://search.petfinder.com/awo/index.cgi

That's all I can think off for now. Any additional suggestions about other sites to post to, no-kill shelters to consider, or other tips for posting here would be greatly appreciated.
